Philippa Hawker The Age (Australia) From its opening credits, [it] proclaims its hand-drawn, delicate, watercolour aesthetic. But it's not all sweetness and light: there's a dark strand of humour and some sly visual gags in this clever tale of opposites. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 19, 2014 Full Review Eddie Cockrell The Australian Two styles combine to create a world at once impressionistic and lived in, infused with the kind of warm glow which emanates from a cosy fireplace. Rated: 4/5 Jun 19, 2014 Full Review Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch Ernest learns to share, Celestine learns to a paint - and the audience learns that in a Disney-dominated marketplace, kids are still free to choose their own mini mouse. Rated: 3/4 Apr 10, 2014 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...a lovely piece of hand-drawn work from directors Stéphane Aubier , Vincent Patar and Benjamin Renner, and this subtitled version is a pleasant diversion for kids of all ages... Jay W This is such a cute little film. The type of film that will cheer you up if you are in a bad mood. The story is just about how a mouse and a bear become best friends. Celestine, the mouse, lives in an underground mouse village and spends her nights collecting teeth. Ernest is a bear that lives in a Bear village above the mouse village. Through various shenanigans the two end up meeting up, and friendship is made. The animation style perfectly compliments the childlike easy going tone of the film. It is almost like a kid's crayon drawings coming to life, (a kid that knows how to draw of course). The music also compliments the theme of the story, just nice little melodies almost what you would hear from a music box. Along with the music and animation, what is at the heart and soul of this movie is the characters. Ernest and Celestine work very well off of each other, they make for an unlikely pair that you can totally believe as friends. Another thing that helps this movie stand out is the setting. I love the world building they demonstrate through the architecture of the mouse city and bear world. I even love the interactions from the background characters who don't play a big role in the plot. They are just very relatable in their everyday problems. There are some elements that don't quite mash up. This is a very sweet and innocent movie, but at the same time it has some more gruesome scenes. I didn't care for any of the zoom ins on the teeth, I just found those parts more gross than funny. And there are several jokes that didn't land and go on for longer than they should. But other than those nitpicks, I really enjoyed this film. I think that is criminally overlooked. It's a good sweet 2D animated film that not nearly enough people have seen. It puts forth an earnest effort to tell a genuine story, there is no winking at the camera, no sarcasm to it. I found that quite refreshing. Bring family and friends together and give this one watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Audience Member One of my favourite movies with beautiful animation, great voice acting in the original (french) version, and a great story written by Daniel Pennac Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Mix R Wonderful animation, great mechanics between two characters, simple, but heartwarming plot - it's a piece of art that you should definitely watch if you want to feel some inner warm. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Aender S Such a cute animation film of a mouse befriending a bear, the two outlaws in their respective worlds. There's even an official version in Luxembourgish, that's a plus in my book. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Gareth v A quaint and sweet story that seems to marry with the pastel watercolour style of animation. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/19/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a beautiful story about tolerance! The universe is awesome and very well adapted from the original book! If you love traditional 2d animation, this film is for you! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews
