Audience Member Ummmmm this was supposed to be funny? I guess I don't understand Chinese comedy, because this was about as comical as a prostate exam. I watched it thinking it was going to be an action thriller of some kind because of the title but I just felt lost and bored while watching this so called black comedy. Ive seen so many better movies where everything goes wrong for one person during the course of their day, and this one didn't cut it....at all. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member anyone who lives or has lived in Asia (especially Hong Kong) will love this movie. excellent... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member I really related to this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Favourite oddball character Simon Lui writes and directs this stress inducing comedy with lots of heart and great local feel. Escape From Hong Kong Island is basically a traditional morality tale about the negative aspects of modern life. Hong Kong is apparently a pretty cold city according to Lui, but when push comes to shove it's residents are both loveable and emphatic, resembling the way New Yorkers often are portrayed by Hollywood feelgood directors. The comedy is largely based on an endless series of cameo appearances which makes the movie seem pretty exclusive and internal, a buddy flick to which the audience were never really invited. The amateurish and sometimes utterly hideous cinematography isn't really compatible with the movie's light comedy and is probably a result of DP Daniel Chan's misdirected arthouse leanings (See Chan's Slow Fade for further references). Still an OK tribute to Hong Kong, though. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member It is not an Oscar-type movie, but the story was well brought out to give the meaning of the movie. You have to really know a lot about Hong Kong to understand this though. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
