Teddy B 01/11/2024 A piece of work that feels so unimpressive yet predictable that you have to resort to nitpicking just to stimulate yourself. So - why does 'Romeo & Juliet' have so many more pages than it's supposed to, how does a girl fall the height of a courthouse and survive (I do not care that there is a trampoline outside), and why does this film want to cram 'The Pagemaster' and 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' together anyways? It’s like the writers read a brief synopsis of the book, really loved Jurassic Park, and were given the big opportunity to write an exciting kids movie and tossed out the idea of adapting a brilliant puzzle plot to create a thriller creature feature. In doing so they also threw away the entire theme of engaging with and loving the library and turned libraries into haunts for monsters that should be run away from. There are ways to adapt beloved books and cut some corners of the plot that are less cinematic. Unfortunately this one is more in tune with the City of Ember adaptation (actually a very appropriate example of a similar-themed book that lost so much in cinematic translation) than, say, the Holes adaptation.
