Critics Consensus

As much fun as it is to see Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger team up onscreen, Escape Plan fails to offer much more than a pale imitation of 1980s popcorn thrills.

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk As implausible macho nonsense goes, it's surprisingly good. Rated: 3/5 Sep 6, 2017 Full Review Louis Black Austin Chronicle The most surprising thing about this movie, outside of its length, is just how unsurprising it really is, especially regarding its tired climax. Rated: 1.5/5 Oct 25, 2013 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) This functional thumper generally gets the job done, plodding merrily, if unremarkably, through the generic set pieces, making a passable fist of well-worn material. Oct 21, 2013 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film Overall, it's fun, it's cheesy, it's chaotic and it's good. You gotta love these guys together. Rated: B Aug 15, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review After the finale degrades into a violent shootout and leaves us dissatisfied, not even solid portrayals by Stallone and Schwarzenegger make Escape Plan anything beyond a very, very guilty piece of actionized entertainment. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 22, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies You’ll have to accept its absurdity and understand that there are several questions you’ll never get sufficient answers for. Jeff L It was ok, kind of nonsensical at times, even from the first ten minutes when he breaks out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Audience Member Silly flick I watched last night. Bad acting by all sadly. Screenplay is weak. Too bad because I like the premise of the story. Could have been pretty great. The dumbest scene ever is when Sylvester Stallone (who is supposed to be a genius but can’t even figure out he’s been duped by overly friendly Schwarzenegger) fashions a sextant out of paper, a pen, and glasses lenses. Ok so let go with it…a few moments later a fellow prisoner uses it to determine latitude from inside an open air prison pit. Lol. That is impossible. You need to see the horizon to use a sextant. I hate when move makers do stuff like that. Bottom line this is watchable but silly and at the end you will be laughing out loud. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Le W Surprisingly I enjoyed this movie. It was fun to watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review Lúcio Leonardo P Seeing two action icon actors together is always cool and fun, especially these two, who seem to have good synergy when they act in the same film. And here it is no different, with an interesting plot, but very predictable. Every situation in which Ray Breslin (Stallone) is placed captures attention, but it is already known what outcome he will have. The location of the prison and the ending of the film are no secret, if you pay attention, you will kill the “riddle” in the middle of the story. Of course, forced scenes couldn't be missed, right? And there are also some incoherent things, for example, how does a lawyer become the master of an escape route in such a short time? Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review John H If you miss your standard 80s action movie, this is for you. The acting is good, the plot meets the minimum requirements for a decent movie. If you think about the movie too much there is a lot that doesn't make sense, but if you are just looking to kill time this will do the trick.
