Critics Consensus

Eternal Beauty deals unevenly yet honorably with complicated themes, elevated by strong work from the ever-reliable Sally Hawkins and David Thewlis.

Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) Eternal Beauty is full of extremely talented people who aren't quite sure what they're doing. Rated: 2/5 Nov 20, 2020 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review The tone is darkly comedic, and that's the thing that makes it difficult. It's also the thing that makes it special. But the balancing act is so strange...not wholly successful but it is trying something. Oct 8, 2020 Full Review Karen Han Polygon Hawkins is masterly, as always, in a role that demands she calibrate her energy differently in almost every scene. Oct 7, 2020 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Eternal Beauty” is an odd and audacious package built on the back of yet another terrific Sally Hawkins performance. Even when the movie loses its way a bit she maintains a strong and emotionally honest character presence. Rated: 3/5 Aug 20, 2022 Full Review Victoria Luxford City AM Eternal Beauty gets the balance right, portraying (Jane's) viewpoint as a surreal and scary world of whispers and fridges with dismembered limbs. However, Jane herself is always sympathetic, a woman trying her best to make her way through a dark place Rated: 4/5 Feb 28, 2022 Full Review Paul M. Bradshaw NME (New Musical Express) Craig Roberts' heartfelt indie is more than just good looks...the director blends stunning visuals with scenes of emotional intensity. Kevin L I love Sally Hawkins. She's wonderful here, as she always is. Totally captures the fractured sense of a person whose life was permanently derailed by a monster of a mother and the trauma of some bugger jilting her. But I wonder if it wasn't the potential of having that evil bat as his mother-in-law that did it. Thewlis is great, too, as a light of hope for Hawkins' Jane. But then that's broken off as well. Billie Piper plays her right dirtbag sister. Basically, this was huge bummer. I can usually take downer subject matter just fine. But this was nothing but down but for a brieft stretch. 2.7 stars Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Yvonne G Just absolutely brilliant drama/television/film... Looking into the life of a schitzophrenic and living in their awful and dillusional world through their eyes.... This was scary at times especially when in charge of a child in her car!!! Wonderful story and the most Superb leading lady who plays Jane... Fantastic watch and thank you to those who produce these amazing films about real life ! Just exemplary viewing Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review isla s This is very much a quirky character driven drama. Sally Hawkins does well portraying a vulnerable, demure young lady. Its more sad than it is funny, so I'm surprised its categorised, in part, as a comedy - there are some light hearted moments in it I suppose but its more a depiction of a dysfunctional family at large than primarily an idyllic rom-com. I thought the cast did well and its an interesting watch. It became quite moving after about an hour, when things take a somewhat more dark turn. I think Sally's performance is reasonably memorable and I'd recommend this film to fans of hers. A key word relating to this film and the main character is fragility. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It was amazing. I just finish it. I even cried during the movie. It'll be hard to follow if you don't focus on the movie. The music fits very well with the scenes. I don't think it is that "bad". Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved the incredible Sally Hawkins who never fails to breathe life into her characters. Her performance was what kept me watching! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member 2 talented actors submit into this creative mess that leads nowhere. Their performances are convencing but script and it's flow damages this movie severely. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
