Critics Consensus

Despite a strong opening that promises sci-fi thrills, Event Horizon quickly devolves into an exercise of style over substance whose flashy effects and gratuitous gore fail to mask its overreliance on horror clichés.

Gregory S Truly underrated sci-fi movie. Has aged incredibly well. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/19/25 Full Review Audience Member This movie was really good. (ENGLISH) Sometimes it happens: you watch the trailer, read what it's about, the music hits... and you just know that movie is going to stay with you forever. That’s what happened to me with Event Horizon, one of those experiences that leave a mark. Horror, science fiction, a suffocating atmosphere, and a soundtrack that still gives me chills. I saw it in the summer of '98 and since then, it’s been fixed in my top 5 favorite films of all time. The premise was already powerful: a ship that reappears years after going missing in a remote point of space... and it's brought something back. What seemed like a rescue mission quickly turns into a space nightmare where logic crumbles and horror seeps in little by little. It doesn't rely on gooey monsters or cheap jump scares — here, the fear is more psychological, more suffocating, darker. Sure, the final stretch may be a bit more flashy, and some narrative decisions might not age perfectly. But I don’t care. Because few films have achieved that addictive mix of science fiction and pure horror — that descent into mental hell with an unforgettable techno-gothic aesthetic. The images stay with you, the screams too, and the unease... even more so. What Event Horizon accomplishes —despite its detractors— is to create its own universe, one where plausibility doesn’t matter as much as what it makes you feel. And for me, that’s worth more than a thousand special effects. A truly cursed gem. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Richard M This movie gets better every time I watch it. I hate seeing the critics take on this. For the time it was made - the content & effects are pretty righteous. Sam Neil & Fishburne are a great yin & yang. I could give a flip about the actual logistics of the scientific aspect of the film, the question is, does it rip? And yes, Event Horizon rips. You would never catch me up on that vessel. Fun 90's sci fi, interesting little world, full tilt bizarro action. If you got nothing else going, it is worth an 11:30 pm click & stick. I will not say which moments zap me out of the darker elements but there are a couple of times that I just laugh and wish they wouldn't have used some corny trope or bit of dialogue (when dude is floating in space mainly)....If you were a Matrix kid, this is worth having in the back pocket. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review raga g Good movie. Ignore the professional critics, who frequently critique while half asleep. ZZZZZzzzzz Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/08/25 Full Review Gregory R a great film that has now become a cult classic, this is a film that you have to think about when you watch it, it wasn't made to just be watched and because of this people end up criticizing it for any reason.
