What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite a strong opening that promises sci-fi thrills, Event Horizon quickly devolves into an exercise of style over substance whose flashy effects and gratuitous gore fail to mask its overreliance on horror clichés.

Dan Top Tier space horror Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/22/25 Full Review Roland Event Horizon is sci fi horror at its best. Movies like this and Alien that answer the question, what's out there? In a delightfully horrifying way. Cast is solid, story is solid even with its 90s cheese but that just adds to the vibe. Still holds up in 2025, a must watch for the horror genre. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/22/25 Full Review Scott L Ignore the haters. This is a well paced, stylish sci-fi/horror hybrid that does a much better job of being Hellraiser in space than Hellraiser: Bloodline did. Paul W.S. Anderson gets a lot of grief for being a director who is all "style over substance", but the horror genre is filled with films that have a lot less substance than Event Horizon. The bottom line is that this film looks great, is very well acted and has an engaging story. Event Horizon is an annual rewatch for me. Don’t sleep on this film if you like films that combine horror and science fiction. It’s great. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/25 Full Review Kevin M. One of the best Horror/ SciFi movies out there. Almost 30 years old and it still holds up. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/25 Full Review Wayne K Paul W. S. Anderson doesn’t have the best reputation in the film world, especially not in art hose circles, but the argument could be made that Event Horizon has, of all the films he’s directed, the most complex and intriguing legacy. It was his attempt to make a no holds barred, bloody and gory R rated film, and it might have worked, had the studio not chickened out and butchered the film in the editing room. What results is a haunted house in space story that starts off suspenseful but eventfully devolves into overwrought spectacle. It’s similar to Danny Boyle’s Sunshine in that regard, where a story about survival in space fails to stick the landing, pivoting instead to stereotypical slasher territory. It’s great to see Sam Neill playing a villain for a change, but he’s not giving much to work with besides saying sinister lines in heavy make up. The violent content is blatantly toned down, instead giving us things like floods of blood and CGI characters covered in blood and on fire. If it had really leant into its dark content, especially its depiction of Hell, it might have been something special or at least remarkable. But as is, it’s very much half-cocked. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/11/25 Full Review David S. It's not as bad as you think and it is still a great horror film. A diverse cast, good gore, and even a little bit of a ghost story, it's a fun scary ride and it's aged well. A film not for everyone, but if you like this kind of film, can't go wrong with this one!!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/01/25 Full Review Read all reviews
