Critics Consensus

Despite a strong opening that promises sci-fi thrills, Event Horizon quickly devolves into an exercise of style over substance whose flashy effects and gratuitous gore fail to mask its overreliance on horror clichés.

Logan D In 2047, the Event Horizon reappears after it vanished and was considered lost during a FTL experiment. A rescue team is sent to investigate. A film long on my watchlist I was not disappointed. I can see why it was a failure at the box office. It has the feel of Alien, sci-fi horror with a crew responding to a message received from a mysterious source. However, there are no aliens, at least not in physical form. And much like Alien, the design of the ships is symbolic-intestine-like corridors, gravity drives as altars, and lighting that isolates and exposes. The film is claustrophobic and escalating, with each crew member confronting personal trauma and guilt, the ship itself becoming a haunted entity. Laurence Fishburne as Captain Miller anchors the film with stoic resolve, while Sam Neill as Dr. Weir delivers a chilling descent into madness. The main attraction for me was the evoking evokes Lovecraftian dread, suggesting realms beyond comprehension and the fragility of human reason. This idea is not often a winner with audiences. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/29/25 Full Review Craig B All these old fogies giving such an awesome movie a terrible rating is exactly why us, as regular viewers who just want to be entertained and or frightened to the bejeezus shouldn't listen to their reviews. They are obviously dried out old prudes who only enjoy movies that we would find completely dull and boring. Event Horizon is neither of these. It is a true classic of the sci-fi/horror genre. My wife and I watched it back when it was released and found it horrifyingly creepy with some truly terrifying moments that really does sear itself into your eyeballs and psych. Sam Neil in particular, pulls off one of the best, most evil characters I've ever had the pleasure of watching. The true star of the show though, in my opinion at least, is the Event Horizon itself. Has there ever been a more creepy space ship? Just the sight of it is enough to give you the creeps in subsequent viewings, and believe me, this is a movie that demands a second viewing so you can absorb what you've just witnessed as it's no less terrifying the 2nd or even 3rd time round, especially now that we have these beautiful and large oled tv's these days. Sure it may show it's age in 4k, but it's no less terrifying. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/12/25 Full Review Jovana B Good sci fi horror, despite looking a bit dated it is still very watchable. Nice concept and departure from the endless recycling of ‘creature in space will kill you’ soap opera. At least it tries to be a bit more cerebral. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/25 Full Review Munchie A One of the best sci-fi horror movies ever made. Hellraiser vibes. Great acting. Underrated. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review Gavinn R. Cheesy acting. Poor budget. Beyond stupid and utterly pointless. Is there anything left to be said? 😂👎 Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Jian B At least Cooper survived… Truly, It's an amazing movie and the concept is very interesting. I really like it although I would never want to watch it again. I had no idea what I was getting myself into as I misread the poster and expected some back to the future stuff.
