Critics Consensus

Despite a strong opening that promises sci-fi thrills, Event Horizon quickly devolves into an exercise of style over substance whose flashy effects and gratuitous gore fail to mask its overreliance on horror clichés.

Ian B Sometimes, as a Trekker and Whovian to the core, a total sci fi nerd, I like a palette refrest. Anderson often so delivers, and Event Horizon sits in my library next to Alien. Every actor in this one gives it their all, nothing is phoned in for a quick £. The script is a clever premise, and Anderson delivers it on screen with panache. Credit also to the set builders. 35% on RT is wrong. Check this diamond of a movie out. Then push the rating where it belongs. This is a proper iconic, cult movie. Be a cult and enjoy it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Nick R One of my favourite horror films of all time. There are few films scarier and, even with age, this film's terror does not reduce. Mix that together with some of the most tactile and believable sci-fi elements of any film and I struggle to see how anyone could not enjoy this true classic. I'm glad to see this film getting the love it deserves in more recent times. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Ralph R "Event Horizon" is one of those movies that pulls you in with its eerie atmosphere and keeps you hooked with its intriguing premise. It’s a sci-fi horror that isn’t just about space exploration but dives into darker, more psychological territory. The visuals are haunting, the tension builds steadily, and the overall design of the ship itself adds so much to the unsettling vibe. From start to finish, the movie keeps you on edge, and the pacing ensures you’re never bored. What I really appreciate about "Event Horizon" is its ability to blend genres so seamlessly. It’s a sci-fi film at its core, but the horror elements are front and center, creating an experience that feels fresh and unique. The story is easy to follow, which makes the intense moments hit even harder. You’re not trying to untangle a complicated plot; you’re just along for the ride, which makes it even more effective when things start to unravel. While it could have benefited from a bit more character development to really drive that emotional connection, the film still manages to leave a lasting impression. It’s the kind of movie that grows on you the more you think about it. If you’re into suspenseful, atmospheric films that mix horror with sci-fi, "Event Horizon" is definitely worth checking out. It’s dark, it’s intense, and it’s an experience you won’t forget anytime soon.
