What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite a strong opening that promises sci-fi thrills, Event Horizon quickly devolves into an exercise of style over substance whose flashy effects and gratuitous gore fail to mask its overreliance on horror clichés.

Stoner J A surreal odyssey from Hell, awesome horror sci-fi movie and CRIMINALLY underrated. A rescue a ship that’s been to an unknown, evil dimension that basically brought Hell with it AWESOME! Seriously bad ass movie. And honestly, the CHI, effects and sets were all done better than Chris Nolan’s Interstellar, 17 years before in 1997! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Audience Member A great movie in itself actually dodging the "Alien" concept monopoly and delivers some heavily eerie vibes. A bit like that chilling cold harsh vibe of Alien Prometheus which made it a great sci fi but a bad mythdestroung alien movie. It was a scary thing when it came out back in the 90s. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Brad S. R A waste of pretty sets and talented actors. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Stephen L Tho flawed and at times logically wobbly, Event Horizon remains one of the smarter, more compelling horror/sci-fi hybrids of the '90s. Anchored by strong performances from Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne, the film explores chilling ideas with bold visual choices and a solid sense of dread. The special effects hold up surprisingly well, and the film’s commitment to its nightmarish tone makes it memorable. That said, it stumbles under the weight of its own mythology - raising metaphysical questions it never answers, and creating powers for its antagonist that don’t hold up to scrutiny. Still, it’s stylish, dark and brimming with disturbing intrigue. A genre gem worth revisiting - if you can stomach it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Ryan M The idea behind it was alright but I can't believe this passed for sci-fi back then, especially considering how long Alien came before it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/17/25 Full Review K K This movie is one of the best scary drama movies. Sci-Fi gruesome movie. I am a fan of so many of the actors in this movie. It was a no-brainer to watch, and I have watched it multiple times. What worked for this movie was the strong acting and interesting concept of what was the "scary" they were going to encounter. With a cast like this, I had no clue about who was going to die or live. This is something that has been missing in many scare movies in recent times: a full ensemble cast. With each character that had kills, it gave an opportunity to expose the creative aspect of gore, deaths and evil ways. The special effects for the time held up, as did the gore and blood. Even watching it today, I don't find myself thinking "this looks stupid" rather I get sucked into the storyline. The visuals were pretty good, especially some of the gruesome nightmare ones. The movie does not take too long to get going with the gore for impatient watchers. Check this movie out! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Read all reviews
