What to Know

Critics Consensus

Everly benefits from Joe Lynch's stylish direction and Salma Hayek's starring work, but it's too thinly written and sleazily violent to fully recommend.

Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Those with an adolescent nostalgia for video-nasty era degradation/retribution may be mildly titillated, but Lynch has neither the wit nor desire to raise this above the level of faux-retro fanboy fantasy. Rated: 1/5 Jun 28, 2015 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) Lynch shows some visual flair with a few clever, Tarantino-like touches but the film overall is a deadening and claustrophobic experience, in which the human interest diminishes as rapidly as the body count rises. Rated: 2/5 Jun 26, 2015 Full Review Wendy Ide Times (UK) Salma Hayek stars in what must be the most distasteful and exploitative film of the year so far. Rated: 1/5 Jun 25, 2015 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com With its drab visual palette and ceaseless repetition of violence, there's little to recommend. Rated: 2/5 Sep 19, 2019 Full Review Beth McDonough The Babbling Blonde Everly is a loud joyous, proud celebration of its genre, and frankly, it's just a hell of a fun thing to watch. Rated: B+ May 10, 2019 Full Review Stephen O'Nion One Room With A View At times threatening to be the glorious piece of exploitation cinema it occasionally aims for, Everly never really gets a grip on... anything, really. C.C. L This was BAD. I mean BAAAAAD! There's so many holes in the plot that I cut it off about 4 times. It almost seems disrespectful to Salma Hayek to actually watch it. I'm pretty sure she also wants to act like this never took place. It's THAT bad. It's so bad that you struggle to figure out how the director didn't see how bad it was. There's almost nothing about it that makes sense. The little girl is autistic or something because she has like 0 sense of danger. Like this little girl would point at a fire and say "It's hot" and run right into it. It's no character's level of intelligence is higher than the little girl's. Nobody has a sense of self-preservation in this movie. 90 minutes of death, explosions and gunshots and the SWAT team doesn't show up until the end. But wait....the police were there 15-20 mins in, evacuating the building, but somehow didn't evacuate every floor. Don't use your brain cells on this movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review mark g I am not sure what job opportunities are coming Salma Hayek's way, but can't be many. This film was beneath any self-respecting actor or actress. Garbage. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review Marisol M This movie is very weak...the only thing that made me think: How are there humans so sick with sex? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Ashley A The final "bad guy" scene was over 40 minutes of just horrible script and action. But I stayed to the end. So at least I have that on my side.
