Franciska (Eva Kerekes) works as a maid in rural Hungary and falls in love with Lajos (Denes Ujlaky), a much older married man who can meet her only on Sundays. When World War II breaks out, naive Franciska does not understand why her Jewish lover goes into hiding. After the war she moves to the city, where she is unexpectedly reunited with Lajos, and the two renew their love. Franciska then joins the police force and rises through the ranks of the repressive regime.
