Besides the performances, which are uniformly strong, what's so terrific about "The Exorcist" is how it's in no hurry to get to the meat of its horror. Unlike today's horror movies, it isn't exploitative. It's about its characters.

An incredibly real film proposing an incredibly unreal premise! Not quite a documentary but if you get sucked into this movie it offers so much fear, hope, dread and entertainment. Enjoy this wonderful horrific show and don't be too scared! The more you watch this film the more you will be scared and frightened whilst wondering what has just happened! I will never tire of watching this masterpiece of 70's cinema. Watch this!, what's the worst that can happen?

An x-rated Rosemary's Baby meets Jeckyl and Hyde; in many ways this is the definitive horror movie; plumbing the depths of that ultimate horror: watching your baby get raped; get taken by the devil. Worse in many ways than getting taken yourself; for the helplessness and guilt it envokes of not being able to save them; and living with the consequences of that; as you watch them fully conscious in their senseless out-of-body coma. As Ellen Burnstyn has stated in interviews "(the story is based on) old, old fears..." Fears from the bible; from ancient mythology; saving yourself; your loved ones from the jaws of the Enemy. Both Ellen Burnstyn and Linda Blair give Oscar caliber performances; (both were nominated); as do acting wunderkinds Jason Miller and Max Von Sydow as the heroic priests trying to save the girl. While the film repulses it absolutely grabs you by the jugular and won't let go till the ending; and then it leaves you with many lasting images; many issues to ponder after the roller coaster is over. Credit William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty for not holding back; really going full throttle into their Heart of Darkness journey here: into the devil inside of man; and not letting the audience off the hook either; that took courage. Easily one of the most powerful movies ever made.

Greetings from the UK...I was only about 16/17 when I saw The Exorcist in the cinema and even then I thought it was good if shallow.Time and many versions of the film have really not changed my mind so I thought I'd watch this new-ish Directors cut...while it may not have ruined the original film like George Lucas did with Star Wars,I once again found myself looking at my watch now and again wishing it would get a move on....some subtle changes,some unnecessary CGI but in the grand scheme of things,STILL shallow and not a patch on some lesser well known horror films....Massively overrated.
