john w A film of its time, not terrible just not terribly good, the courtyard scene near the end was a homage to the Wild Bunch. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/23 Full Review Johnathon W Solid modern western that, while doesn't quite jell its many pieces, makes for an entertaining watch. Nick Note is superb as the Texas Ranger living a straight and narrow life to take down Cash (an excellent Powers Boothe), a drug dealer who also happens to be his former best friend. In the background, his matched by a who's who of character actors, from Michael Ironside to Clancy Brown, playing an elite military unit with their own mission. Behind the camera, director Walter Hill crafts a gritty western with some superb gun fights and interesting concepts (the idea of a black ops unit of soldiers who faked their deaths could be a movie by itself). However, all the moving parts never quite come together, as you never know what the unit is doing until the end of the film, along with some abrupt cuts that affect the overall narrative. Still, a fun, gritty watch with a grade A cast. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/06/23 Full Review Carlos I Another awesome Western throwback from Walter Hill. It pretty much follows all the tropes you would expect from a film like this, but it's damn cool while it's doing it. Nolte is great as the grizzled ranger who's morality is tested by his questionable bond with the equally awesome villainous turn from Powers Boothe. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/10/22 Full Review gregory s Fantastic neo-western. Nolte portrays the ideal modern Texas Ranger. Lots of nods to Pecinpah's "Wild Bunch". Booth steals the show as the Padrón bad guy. The Blue Ray release is a much better digital transfer than the VHS & DVD copies that have been available. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review kyal b Classic 80s action flick. Great cast. One of Walter Hill's best Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review jon c Execute with extreme prejudice Nick Nolte, Michael Ironside, Clancy Brown, the late Rip Torn, and Powers Boothe Jack Bentee is a Texas Ranger who has taken a very different path than his childhood buddy, Cash Bailey who is now a ruthless drug lord in charge of narcotics While Benteen and Bailey are on opposites sides of the law, they share a common interest; the lovely Sarita Cisneros who has been involved with both men, this creates a complicated love triangle The tension between Benteen and Bailey gets further heightened when the lawman plays a key role in a major narcotics bust, resulting in a fierce showdown At the beginning of the movie five U.S. Army sergeants meet up with Major Paul Hackett, the leader of the clandestine Zombie Unit, composed of soldiers reported to be killed-in-action and on temporary assignment under Hackett for the duration of a secret mission The mission is to track down Bailey Yet he and Bentee have a past that'll always clash with their present Bailey has to satisfy his clientele while Bentee has to follow the letter of the law Sarita feels like she's being tugged along and wants Bentee to realize he might lose her This feels like an ode to the 1970s westerns with a dry deadly desert environment, brutal gunfights, and sizzling chemistry between the hero and villain I'm actually amazed they have a fair set of action set pieces...a few explosions to boot particularly the climax It's all guns blazing along with massive betrayals Nolte and Boothe make for quite the bitter rivals each with something to fight for or fight over; Bailey is in too deep with what he never had before while Bentee tries to go the more practical way Director Walter Hill shows these kind of men being leaner, meaner and very intense than real-life Lots of vivid characterizations and harsh confrontations yet it still feels like the gritty western flicks of old which is always welcome Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Walter Hill is the right director for this material. He specializes in male action movies where the characters are all a little taller, leaner, meaner and more obscene than in real life. Rated: 3/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Mitchell Beaupre Paste Magazine While Extreme Prejudice plays the Peckinpah elements straight, Hill throws some extra flavor in with intentional slices of outlandish embellishment to reality, as well as the long-simmering rivalry between its main characters. Rated: 8.5/10 Sep 29, 2023 Full Review Richard Freedman Newhouse News Service Beneath its trendy veneer of covert operations, Extreme Prejudice is a whale of an old-fashioned Western. Rated: 3/4 Nov 5, 2019 Full Review Hilary Mantel The Spectator The film depends entirely on the more banal conventions of the western -- the only novelty is that the baddie wears a white hat. Apr 9, 2019 Full Review Cathy Burke United Press International Though not perfect, Extreme Prejudice provides a steely Nick Nolte as the white hat hero and for those who pine for the days when Westerns were king, the film is worth seeing. Nov 8, 2016 Full Review Chuck O'Leary Fantastica Daily Vintage Walter Hill. Mean and tough with vivid characterizations, intense confrontations and hard-edged action galore.
