This brooding, measured look at adultery is ultimately emotionally riveting, thanks to its script and performances.

Roger Clarke Independent (UK) A suffocating, anachronistic piece of film-making. Rated: 2/5 Mar 26, 2024 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal It's all the more moving that, after half a lifetime, Ingmar Bergman and Liv Ullmann are still seeking illumination, and expiation, through the public yet intensely personal medium of film. Feb 5, 2018 Full Review Keith Uhlich House Next Door This could be a regretful remembrance of things past on the part of "Bergman" or it could be a pure fiction torn from the ether. Apr 19, 2008 Full Review Susan Sontag Artforum Ullmann’s best work by far, with one of the greatest film performances ever, by Lena Endre. May 2, 2024 Full Review Felicia Feaster Creative Loafing Faithless is an engrossing assertion of the Swedish art film director's propensity for profound navel-gazing into the morality of our actions. Jan 29, 2020 Full Review Jason Gorber Film Scouts While not to everyone's taste, the technical and narrative complexity alone are to be applauded - the film looks gorgeous, and the film is both literate and witty. StephenPaul C The greatest 02 hours: and 34 minutes featuring a Swedish cast of actors and crew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/26/23 Full Review Dave S Written by Ingmar Bergman and directed by Liv Ullmann, one can't help but think that Faithless is some sort of collective confessional, an exercise in chasing away demons that may have haunted them for years. Regardless, the movie tackles the subject of infidelity with surgical precision, told through the lens of an aging director (Erland Josephson) and the characters he has conjured to life, primarily the catalyst of the events, an actress named Marianne (Lena Endre). Thanks to some solid direction by Ullmann, a typically intelligent and insightful script from Bergman, and a remarkable performance from Endre, Faithless deals with the subject matter unlike any other film of its kind – alternately loving, brutal, and tragic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Ullmann makes a Bergman movie, using his script, actors and his location. A triangular couple relation, including Bergman? himself. Naturally the whole spectre of emotions are blown in your face. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member (** 1/2): The film is a bit overlong, and I ultimately felt unsatisfied with the end product. I really like the concept of the film (and the cast is good), but I just can't quite recommend it. A near-miss.
