Jacob B @RT89309114 Mar 1 If it feels like parts of Fanboys have aged poorly, that's probably because Ernest Cline wrote the script. Yes, the same guy who's stumped by the revisionist history that his book Ready Player One sucks actually. This movie does have some amusing quotes + gags, fun cameos/guest stars and a few moments of heart. But I didn’t find the characters that likeable* (except Kristen Bell, she's cool), the dialogue borders on poor man's Kevin Smith (and I'd probably feel that way even if he didn't have a cameo) and the jokes come off as low-hanging fruit-territory at best (that Jar Jar character sure is going to be the MVP!) and obnoxious at worst. Fanboys has good intentions and maybe Star Wars fans who remember the hype for Phantom Menace will feel nostalgic but this film made me understand why, in the post-Gamergate landscape, Ernest Cline is dislike for giving geek culture a bad name. *Harassing Trekkies doesn't make for the most rootable heroes IMO See more Nol P @NolPKelowna Jul 30 With so many crappy movies being released now in 2024 and 2025 this is like an Oscar winner now in comparison to all the crap put out now. See more Jace E @thefilmguy May 21 A movie by nerds for nerds. First and foremost, this movie has one of the best loglines in recent memory. The second that I read it, I knew that I had to watch as soon as possible. What I loved most about this movie is seeing their unabashed passion for something that others would deem pointless or stupid. Every single nuance, quote and cameo had a purpose. While the film is not a masterpiece, neither was Phantom Menace. Classic buddy comedy that's got adventure and fuzzy feelings added in for good measure. A fantastic cast lends itself to the overall enjoyment of this movie, and their friendships are iconic. Super fun and exciting, nerdy in the best way, and a cult favorite for me and mine!
