Critics Consensus

Handsome and simplistic, Far and Away has the beauty of an American epic without the breadth.

[Howard] has cast two actors -- Cruise and Nicole Kidman -- who simply do not have the scope or abilities to carry an epic. And he does not have a strong enough support team to fill in the gaps. Go to Full Review

Far and Away... is the director's attempt to step into the cinematic shoes of directors John Ford and David Lean. And, certainly, he's stepped into something with this sprawling, old-fashioned melodrama. Go to Full Review

A little irreverence and some revisionist strokes would have lent some welcome spice to this bland meat-and-potatoes serving of U.S. history. Go to Full Review

There's something flat and unfulfilling about Far and Away, as though Mr. Howard bit off more than he could chew. Go to Full Review

It is filled with characters willing to work, fight, pluck chickens and do anything to achieve their dream. Seldom will you find a film that portrays such values in positive terms. Go to Full Review

Scrib C Nov 27 This film lives rent free in my brain. That is all you need to know about this film, it stands the test of time. It was entertaining when I first viewed it, and it is just as entertaining as now. A time capsule of two hungry actors who together in real life at the time made thus film that much more engaging! Its epic in scale and they do a good job making us feel that! Its got charm, adventure, beautifully shot. Sometimes "critics" get it wrong. For those who talk down on this film, I say there is still time to redract your views and join the bunch of us who truly do love movies and film! Go Nicole! Go Tom! Y'all rocked this! I watched this movie when it first came out and thoroughly enjoyed the story and cinematography and whenever I find it on tv or on a streaming service, I try to make time to watch it. To me, Cruise is an over rated human being, but a fine actor and although his Irish accent isn’t the finest, who really cares. To me, this movie is always enjoyable and the story is great, be damned with what the critics say. When they rate poorly the movie is almost always great. When they rate well, I find it’s usually a flop. See more Jairus R Aug 31 One of my favorite movies for its portrayal of immigration, pioneers, the American dream, romance. It is beautiful and poignant. Don’t know why it isn’t rated better. Cruise and Kidman did a great job. See more thiago s @Thiagostone Jul 12 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Shaun R @Shaun666 Jun 20 Not sure what the bad critics and reviews are all about. This is a great movie, one of the underrated films of the 90s. It’s fast paced, funny, non pretentious, good action and a great storyline. See more Read all reviews
