Maddie E It's a great movie for how short it is, film classic Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review Jay W From the creators of "The Snowman" (1982) comes "Father Christmas". The film maintains the same sort of crayon chalk art style of the original. But where "The Snowman" consisted solely of visuals and music to tell the story, "Father Christmas" is fully voiced, narrated throughout by the eponymous Santa. I do credit this film for trying to do something different than the original. (If you just want more of the same I recommend "Snowman and the Snowdog") But everything about this feels like a cheaper, lesser version of the original. There isn't any real conflict in the story. It is just Santa going on vacation. That could be interesting, but all he seems to do is complain about the food and prices. It's fine as festive background noise as you wrap your presents, but I can't really recommend it beyond that. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review redphonedeb Love it, very festive film. A fab, happy watch Father Christmas on his holidays, great fun. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/21/23 Full Review Audience Member It may lack the emotional weight and beauty of The Snowman, but Father Christmas does manage to be incredibly entertaining in it's own right, thanks to the funny depictions of the hijinks Father Christmas gets into throughout the rest of the year and Mel Smith's great voice-acting skills in depicting a grumpier and more relatable Santa than in most depictions. An overall bloomin' classic. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Father Christmas, or as I always remembered it 'another bloomin' Christmas' is based on the Raymond Brigg's book and follows Santa as he decides to go on holiday for once, in his free time during the other 364 days of the year. Voiced by Mel Smith, this version of Father Christmas is quite a grumpy sort and disaster seems to follow him from one destination to the next. Considering he's the only character that has more than one dialogue in the film, Mel Smith carries it well and manages to make the grumpy old man rather charming and fun to watch as he travels from country to country at quite a fast pace. The animation is also very charming and is in the same style of The Snowman, another, more famous story of Brigg's who also has a cameo in Father Christmas. However the musical score isn't quite as compelling as that of The Snowman and is a little forgettable at times. Although my experience of this film may be coloured by nostalgia, having thoroughly enjoyed it as a young child, I still think this is a good film. At only 25mins long, this little cartoon is short and sweet and if you've never happened upon it before, I would definitely recommend it as a good little Christmas film.
