Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro) drive a red convertible across the Mojave desert to Las Vegas with a suitcase full of drugs to cover a motorcycle race. As their consumption of drugs increases at an alarming rate, the stoned duo trash their hotel room and fear legal repercussions. Duke begins to drive back to L.A., but after an odd run-in with a cop (Gary Busey), he returns to Sin City and continues his wild drug binge.

There’s plenty of potential here, but only some of it lands. The film starts strong with absurd character work, razor-sharp dialogue, and Johnny Depp’s wildly entertaining physical comedy. The visual style is also impressively creative and immersive. But once the novelty wears off, you’re left wanting more. A stronger narrative or thematic backbone could have elevated it beyond a stylish descent into chaos. As it stands, it’s a trip worth taking—just don’t expect it to go anywhere.

The film is a masterpiece. It's not about the drugs, it's about the fallout of the war on drugs, destroying the hippy movement and divorcing the use of drugs from a meaningful social movement. This is THE movie on Late Stage Capitalism.
