Critics Consensus

Visually inventive and gleefully over the top, Luc Besson's The Fifth Element is a fantastic piece of pop sci-fi that never takes itself too seriously.

Duane Byrge Hollywood Reporter Narratively challenged, visually monotonous and aurally overpowering, The Fifth Element is a staggering accretion of all the wrong elements and some rather dopey ones as well. May 10, 2018 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune The Fifth Element has enough eye-appeal for two good movies. Rated: 3/4 May 10, 2017 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal In this movie and many like it, the only elements that count are impact, impact, impact and impact. The fifth element is gibberish. Jul 14, 2014 Full Review Thomas Lethbridge Screen Rant Released in 1997, it's remarkable how well Luc Besson's The Fifth Element still holds up, nearly three decades after its initial release. Rated: 8/10 Nov 15, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review As irresistible—if occasionally annoying—popcorn-munching escapism, The Fifth Element remains an experience of diversionary entertainment, and almost exclusively about rehashing previously explored surfaces with a new sheen. Rated: 3/4 Sep 6, 2023 Full Review Travis Johnson Flicks (AU, NZ, UK) A sci-fi film a million aesthetic miles away from the industrial dystopias, dusty wastelands, and sterile starships of most screen SF of the time. Audience Member The vivid characters and some obvious (and not as obvious) humor in the movie are top notch. I loved all the whacky people and the very serious goal and ending. I laughed so much! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Fredi T The visual presentation in the film is truly exceptional. From the grand opening scene where a massive spaceship travels through the vastness of space, to the dazzling futuristic cityscape with its intricate architecture and transportation systems, every frame is filled with detail and creativity. Director Luc Besson has crafted a vibrant, highly advanced yet perilously dangerous future world. Towering skyscrapers are intertwined with narrow, crowded streets, and flying cars navigate through complex aerial highways. These designs not only showcase the advanced technological development of the world but also create a highly immersive and realistic sci-fi environment for the audience. The design of various alien creatures is equally imaginative, ranging from small, adorable beings to massive, imposing monsters. Each one demonstrates the creators' boundless imagination and playful creativity. A lovely clone meets her match in Bruce Willis. Star trek like creatures and sets still fairly fresh in 2024. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Jonathan F One of the best science fiction movies ever made. It holds up so well even 25 years later. Watched this movie probably 20+ times over the years Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Michelle L The fifth element is by far ahead of its time, its by far one of the most underrated sci fi movies of all time Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Alysha S 4.17. The film is a great combination of great ideas and science fiction. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
