What to Know

Critics Consensus

Charming despite its central character's unfortunate personality traits, Film Geek serves as a slight yet amusing calling card for writer-director James Westby.

Toddy Burton Austin Chronicle This portrayal of a two-dimensional character with an annoyingly vacuous obsession is almost enough to dissuade anyone from ever watching another movie again, beginning with this one. Rated: 0/5 May 13, 2006 Full Review Jan Stuart Newsday As played by Melik Malkasian with Pee-Wee Herman-y chirpiness, you feel for him as you would any out-of-it sibling who seems beyond help. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 15, 2006 Full Review Lisa Schwarzbaum Entertainment Weekly Perceptively hilarious. Rated: B+ Feb 15, 2006 Full Review Kam Williams Upstage Magazine Here, getting there is all the fun, and this flick is stocked with laughs galore, all at the expense of the most clueless loser since Napoleon Dynamite. Rated: 4/4 Mar 5, 2007 Full Review David Cornelius eFilmCritic.com It's so very easy to love Film Geek, especially if you are one. Rated: 4/5 Oct 11, 2006 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault Amusing (and, at 72 minutes, in and out of there fast), with a diabolically dweeby performance by Melik Malkasian. Kyle M Disappointingly misleading and disgracefully shameless embarrassment when unnecessarily full blown the stereotypes surrounding the title offensively into an unappealing, unconvincing mix, despite its charms through the independence aesthetic around Malkasian's committed performance only whenever his mind vomit impressively over his intolerable ego albeit rare comedically charming bits. At the end, you'll be relief that it's over. (C) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/24/22 Full Review Audience Member Who are you trying to get to? I cant rent this to you! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Begins with promise, but then falls into a predictable and pointless mess. I actually started liking this movie because of the protagonist. That's me right there, except not as anti-social and weird. I'm the guy people come to for movie recommendations and I'm the guy that pulls out the obscure directors and even screenwriters. I know most of the Best Picture winners of for sure the past forty years, and I can tell you a good amount of the nominees. I watch at least three movies a week and have seen more movies than the average person twice my age. I know the trivia, I love talking about movies, and I know film, and the beginning of this movie really showed that interesting and unique obsession. But then once the love interest comes into play, it becomes a predictable and completely stupid story that you can already tell where it's headed. I really thought I would enjoy this one. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Surprisingly heartwarming, despite the insufferable nature of the main character. I found myself rooting for him toward the end. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member He looks like a cross between Barney Fife and Forrest Gump and sounds just like Beavis & Butthead. What's not to like? OK, I'm kidding, but if you can get past the idea that this is NOT someone you'd like to be stuck in a room with, this film is in the fine tradition of PeeWee's Great Adventure and Pennies From Heaven--Geek Made Good. It's a "feel good" movie, because if someone like this does ok, you feel like you could, too. . . .And of course, the last shot brings us back to reality. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member And you thought you were a film geek. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
