Critics Consensus

Flannery's filmmaking doesn't live up to its subject's classic work, but it remains a reasonably engaging introduction.

Alissa Wilkinson Vox For those who've read O'Connor and those who haven't alike, it's a strong entry point. Aug 4, 2020 Full Review Mark Feeney Boston Globe If there's a film or TV version of O'Connor's fiction, clips will be seen. This is distracting. The sound of a typewriter is frequently heard on the soundtrack. (O'Connor was a writer, get it?) Rated: 2/4 Jul 30, 2020 Full Review John Anderson America Magazine The documentary places its subject, partly by describing her spiritual practices, prayer book and worldview, among the great Catholic writers... Jul 20, 2020 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com This overlooked maverick of the Southern Gothic form gets a soup-to-nuts treatment, courtesy of PBS, in this indispensable documentary. Sit down, and read Flannery O'Connor. Rated: A Jan 21, 2022 Full Review Rachel West That Shelf Presenting a straightforward biography, Flannery fails to deliver any meaningful insight into the work of Flannery O'Connor. Audience Member In the vein of a Ken Burns' documentary, this one tells the story of an often misunderstood Southern Catholic writer of the mid-20th Century. Mary Flannery O'Connor ... who took the Southern novel/short story and turned it on its head ... is lovingly dealt with in this movie. Dying at 39, just when her literary genius was getting going, O'Connor wrote because she HAD to write ... she couldn't care less for her critics (whether critical of her stories or critical of her religion) ... what an amazing woman. This documentary is a MUST-See for anyone interested in Catholic authors ... Southern authors ... American literature ... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member I haven't seen the movie yet, only the trailor. How can I get a copy? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the best bio-docs I've seen. Comprehensive, well researched, and artfully presented. The fusion of narration, photos, archival interview footage with music and animation is brilliant. Much like O'Connor was not your typical writer, Flannery is not your typical documentary. Lit geeks, Teachers, Readers, O'Connor fans...worth your time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautifully done. Superb.
