Fleeing a trumped-up murder charge, Johnny Blake (John Garfield) travels from one oil field to another in search of work, always moving to escape the long arm of the law. When he meets foreman Hap O'Connor (Pat O'Brien), Blake manages to save his life from a disgruntled former employee, thereby compelling O'Connor to hire him. Their arrangement works well -- until a love triangle forms with the beautiful Linda Chalmers (Frances Farmer), and a bar fight alerts the cops to Blake's whereabouts.

There are very funny scenes as the Briskows go Beverly Hillbillies, plus a climax that’s all fire and flood. Go to Full Review

09/19/2012 Run of the mill drama enhanced by Garfield's acting. O'Brien is his usual capable gruff self and the film isn't bad just something you've seen a million times before. Also of interest for the inclusion of the troubled ultimately tragic Frances Farmer as the female lead. The part doesn't challenge her but she is a charming engaging presence. See more 09/19/2012 reminded me of MGM's 'boom town" See more 04/01/2010 This was not a major film at the time, but with John Garfield in it, it?s worth watching. Adding interest to it is the fascinating Frances Farmer. She is so hauntingly beautiful, and one cannot help but think of her tragic life. The story is pretty routine but it is well done and entertaining. Directed by Alfred E. Green. See more 03/08/2010 great 2 see the real frances farmer-quite a good actor See more Read all reviews
