A sonic collective who can't decide on a name takes up a residency at an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance. The members Elle di Elle, Billy Rubin and Lamina Propria are caught up in their own power struggles, only their dysfunctional dynamic is furthermore exacerbated when they have to answer to the institute's head, Jan Stevens. With the various rivalries unfolding, Stones, the Institute's 'dossierge' has to privately endure increasingly fraught stomach problems whilst documenting the collective's activities. Upon hearing of Stones's visits to the gastroenterologist, Dr. Glock, Elle coerces him into her performances in a desperate bid for authenticity. The reluctant Stones puts up with the collective's plans to use his condition for their art whilst Jan Stevens goes to war with Elle over creative differences.

This was my first Strickland movie, and I must say it stayed with me for several days and I did enjoy it. I felt like he borrows from several styles – large slivers of Peter Greenaway 90's arthouse movies, and Wes Anderson framing shots of buildings and scenes, lots of early 90's Almodovar shock and glamour, and sometimes humour. I thought it had a good set of points to make about the creative community and what clashing egos and power dynamics can do to evolve (or devolve depending on how you view it) art. I felt like a few points got made several times over though. Very well acted and interesting.

Pretty enjoyable, although, as often with Strickland, the ending circling with the beginning is confusing. In this instance [spoiler alert], we assume they are eating Elle, but then she appears in the audience. I'd have preferred it without. I've only watched it once. Maybe a second viewing will make more sense. And Strickland doesn't want it to be a comedy (I must rewatch Tampopo), but I'm not sure what it would be without comic reception.

Perhaps the movie goes too far with its provocations (only then to pull the rug out from underneath the audience) however it is hard to deny how well Strickland and the actors capture exactly the right tone here. All of the characters take themselves so seriously while saying completely ridiculous things which is much funnier than if everyone was winking at the audience.

Weird but good. Great characters and some good laughs. Also proves that a story can contain a lot of sex that's thematically relevant without the viewer being forced to actually watch it take place in graphic detail.

I fully expect this film to get a lot of bad reviews. I expect that the filmmakers knew it would get a lot of bad reviews. That's what makes it so amazing…. They just didn't give a f*#&. This film was irreverent, funny, thoughtful, and badass. It's art without a filter and I love it.

If horror and comedy combined into this then we are all doomed. An unfunny, self-aware, unimportant masquerade as art. Peter Strickland has been given way too many chances and continues to fail in virtually every target. His films somehow keep getting worse. No matter how absurd or irreverent, it is boring as heck. Final Score: 0.9/10
