      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan give it all they've got, but they're ultimately undone by Foe's clunky sci-fi trappings and ponderous attempts to generate psychological thrills.

Regina P So... I liked this story. I was very confused about who was real and who wasn't. The timeline confused me, and I wasn't sure if the movie was really telling the truth about which person was a clone. But I am pretty sure I got it straight in the end. Seemed strange to have 2 identical couples with one human and one bot in each pairing. (I think that's what happened.) I like the lesson in that. People really don't put labor into finding intimacy with other humans. People prefer to get along with someone who they designed specifically for their own tastes. It is very sad. We are self-centered and lazy, and the loneliness epidemic will likely be solved with bots and droids. Very tragic. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Amanda H I am very surprised by all the negative reviews of this movie. I was completely surprised with the ending. I thought the acting was beautifully done. I was so fascinated I had to go out and read the book. I actually found the movie to be better than the book which is unusual.. interesting and well done film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review Will O I think the critics were hard on this movie, sometimes you have think through the perspective of the character, fancy words can condemn a movie. Imagine that your partner fell in love with a clone of yourself, how would you feel? What would you do? This marriage was failing, and a clone with the love of a new relationship replaced the lost one. That is what this movie is about. It's clever and awkward, just like love. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review brynn h It was slow, but in a way that pulled me in and allowed me to see the oh so subtle flickers that told the story. Beautifully shot, beautifully acted, and a mind bendy storyline that surprised me. If you're looking for a psychological drama, not a sci fi flick, this is a good choice. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Jeffrey P A frustratingly weird movie that lacks exposition for everything making it weird, rendering only rotten Easter eggs for sub-culturists who fancy their selves as cultured at the forefront. I've always been of the belief that good sci-fi opens new doors in the mind, but this opened doors I did not want or need opened, and it's best forgotten unless you need something else to complain about. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Leesa F Slow burner. Sedate. Story line was very underwhelming. Two great actors. One missed opportunity. Robert Levin Newsday It's suffocating to the point where you're as desperate for an escape from this scorched Earth misery as these characters. Rated: 1/4 Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) These scenes from a marriage are sometimes evocative, but they don’t tie together. Jan 17, 2024 Full Review David Stratton The Australian Overall, the film must be counted as a disappointment, though there are interesting elements to this futuristic drama. Rated: 3/5 Nov 7, 2023 Full Review Luke Goodsell ABC News (Australia) A film bravely, and admirably, committed to the kind of big emotional swing that unfortunately proves to be its undoing. Apr 10, 2024 Full Review Ruth Maramis FlixChatter Film Blog The slow-pace can be frustrating to those looking for more action in their sci-fi, but what you'll find is astute, nuanced performances from two leads, especially Ronan. Rated: 3/5 Jan 21, 2024 Full Review Enrique Abenia Cinemanía (Spain) A story with a particularity that, although it exposes aspects of science fiction, in essence it is a marital drama.
