Academy Award nominees Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal star in Foe, a haunting exploration of marriage and identity set in an uncertain world. Hen and Junior farm a secluded piece of land that has been in Junior's family for generations, but their quiet life is thrown into turmoil when an uninvited stranger (Aaron Pierre) shows up at their door with a startling proposal. Based on best-selling author Iain Reid's novel, directed by Garth Davis, and co-written by Davis and Reid, Foe's mesmerizing imagery and persistent questions about the nature of humanity (and artificial humanity) bring the not-too-distant future to luminous life.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan give it all they've got, but they're ultimately undone by Foe's clunky sci-fi trappings and ponderous attempts to generate psychological thrills.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan are two of the finest young actors but Foe just doesn't give them their time to shine. Rated: 2/5 Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday It's suffocating to the point where you're as desperate for an escape from this scorched Earth misery as these characters. Rated: 1/4 Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) These scenes from a marriage are sometimes evocative, but they don’t tie together. Jan 17, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper In Their Own League “Foe” wants to be a delicate look at how love is lost and eventually replaced, possibly by unorthodox stand-ins, but it’s a rather incurious sci-fi feature that squanders its themes and setup in favour of melodrama. Rated: 2/5 Jul 19, 2024 Full Review Nelson Acosta Koimoi Garth Davis directs two of the best and hottest young actors in the business, but he cannot create chemistry between them, which deflates the film's romantic vein. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views The story feels like a prequel for “Blade Runner” (1982) meets “The Stepford Wives” (1975) except no human beings were harmed in the making of this film. Rob A Very well acted and (spoiler alert) Saoirse can play the piano pretty well, but I found the script to be insufferable nonsense. I mean come on - show me something that makes sense. And sorry, but anyone who says I just didn't get it is simply being pretentious. One or two good scenes can't save us from this mess of a screenplay. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review julie b Genuinely think this movie would have been better just by letting Saorise and Paul Mescal speak normally and not naming his character junior. Went in not knowing much and was disappointed, but it wasn’t all bad and I don’t regret seeing it. I liked that it was a super small cast. Some beautiful shots, glimmers of good acting (best performances during shower meltdown scenes), and interesting themes, but overall feel the combination of AI, failing marriage, space, and eco-crisis is attempting to tackle too much, and there’s still a lot I don’t fully understand. The dialogue is also just not good. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Jerod S Foe takes the problem of relocating people from earth to a space station and turns it over on itself so many times that its numbing instead of thrilling. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review Audience Member Would've been twice as good if the director just let them use their own accents Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Melanie U Something different that forces you to think, not just a simple story thrown at you with no thoughts. Both Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal are wonderful actors. I really liked this movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review Ana Lúcia B What is wrong with these movie critics? Foe is a great movie in all aspects: acting, cinematography, plot (which is based on a novel), music, sound... everything. They want Hollywood fast-paced action I guess.
