Super brief but efficient, Following represents director Christopher Nolan's burgeoning talent in tight filmmaking and hard-edge noir.

Entertaining, but material doesn't develop the full, edgy potential that similar paranoid-triangle efforts realized. Go to Full Review

Following (1998) is an imperfect, but nonetheless brainy, existential take on film noir, which seems even more impressive considering its limited budget. Go to Full Review

For all the deadpan delivery of a committed cast, this is ultimately a misfire, but a fascinating and unusual one nonetheless. Go to Full Review

Following‘s short duration is a plus and adds to the suspense, while the plot revelations come at a measured pace, making each second of the film’s runtime count. Following is Nolan’s most underrated film and deserves wider recognition and praise. Go to Full Review

Somewhat meta in how a film writer voyeuristically finds his stories, and in some ways, you can see Nolan trying to find himself. Go to Full Review

Tyler S @tylerking24 Dec 1 I'll probably raise this after watching it a second time, but this was a cool way for Christopher Nolan to introduce himself to Hollywood. A pretty fascinating story that had me a little lost early, but it all got tied together by the end. Just like Nolan normally does. See more Ashtin K Nov 2 The film is a black-and-white, 16mm masterclass in characterization, brisk storytelling and shot composition that will leave you thinking, “man, this Christopher Nolan guy knows how to make a movie”. See more Ray C Oct 17 A twisty little thriller and an interesting part of Christopher Nolan's filmography. Following's budget is both its most impressive aspect as well as its biggest weakness. The fact that Nolan was able to make this for just $6,000 is incredible. However, there are some noticeable technical limitations, particularly in the audio quality. Despite its problems, the film is worth watching just to see how much he’s grown as a director. See more Aluna U Sep 23 Following is Christopher Nolan’s low-budget debut film, crafted almost entirely on his own—from writing to editing—using non-professional actors and friends’ homes as sets. Despite its modest resources, the film delivers a compelling and complex narrative about a writer’s descent into deception after following the wrong person. With its clever dual meaning and signature nonlinear storytelling, Following demands full attention from viewers to fully grasp its layered plot and early glimpse of Nolan’s distinct filmmaking style. See more Sam E. @WiscoReviews Jul 31 What a fantastic start for our birthday boy today, Christopher Nolan. You truly see the start of all the Christopher Nolan staples in this film, and the fact that Nolan was only 28 when he wrote, directed, filmed, and co-produced this film on a tiny, tiny budget is incredible. It has flaws, as some of the typical Nolan dialogue states the obvious, and the ending isn’t quite my favorite. But man, this was a great watch, and I’d recommend anyone check this out if you’re a huge Nolan fan! See more Read all reviews
