Xan Brooks Independent (UK) The stabs at humour are tentative; the acting tones clash worryingly. It's a film afflicted by a barely disguised crisis of confidence. Dec 20, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Patrick S Despite its unevenness this movie has to be read as a close reference piece to the actual Shakespearian play it actually refers to. If one understands that, then the key to the developing story becomes much clearer to the viewer. Granted, this is not a movie for everyone and one might say that it is rather developed for the thinking viewer than for a general audience in mind. This is not your usual comedy and for what it is it is more a psychological examination of the characters through satirical innuendos and as such it works perfectly. I liked it but it is in the eye of the beholder whether one might really be attracted to it or not and as I said it is a film that has to be watched attentively and not frugally to fully appreciate its contents. One thing is for sure - this is not your average box office smasher, nor is it a true comedy as such. It is a point of view of what people are made of when confronted with certain challenges in a moment of their lives that may appear to be odd or unusual. If you can manage to put yourself into the skin of one of the characters and recognize an affinity with them, then you are half ways into the story itself and you will start to feel the same as I have, in other words, being part of that struggling team. Sounds complicated? Well, if you have watched other Poliakoff's movies you will experience the same thinking pattern he imposes unto the viewer. What he wants is to entertain you through heavy thinking. If you can manage that, then you will enjoy this so called romantic comedy and you will come out of it by reflecting upon your own life a bit more critically. For you to choose whether you want to enter this maze or if you rather prefer to have just pure entertainment for the sake of it, but keep in mind that every maze has a specific pattern and it is up to you to find the way out of it.
