The "Vampire" has been given an inimitable interpretation by Theda Bara... There is also noticeable, beside the fine photographic results achieved, a marvelous attention to the smallest human detail. Go to Full Review

The old fashioned drama is creaky and if judged just in modern terms, it doesn't pass the giggle test. Go to Full Review

For film buffs it is interesting from a historical perspective but as a film narrative it's just too crude by today's standards. Go to Full Review

@TMProofreader 01/26/2019 The best romance movie ever made! With the best movie character ever portrayed: Theda Bara as "The Vampire"! See more 03/22/2014 ok silent vehicle for theda bara See more 08/11/2011 Considered to be the first "vampire" flick, it doesn't have any fangs or even blood. At the time a vamp was considered as slang for a sexually predatory woman. What was consider to be a first was Theda Bara who would be cinema's very first femme fatale. It would be in this role that would launch her career. She would go on to star in 40 films between 1914 and 1926. Sadly, only a few of those films would survive from a fire at Fox's film storage. John Schuyler and his family and friends are happy. One of the big highlights of the film is a very impressively shot 7 minute opening sequence where in the end of it the family watches the sunset on their happiness before introducing us to 'The Vamp'. She doesn't bite, but what she does is suck the life out every man she meets until they have very little or die. Their first encounter is on a boat as John makes his way to England. He's a special diplomatic representative and his name in the paper stating this sends 'The Vamp' to seek him out. It's on the boat where it all begins. Months go by as John is cast under a spell by the wicked 'Vamp'. He forgets his wife, daughter and friends. They worry about him and know that it's this woman who is destroying him. Theda's role is a particular venomous portrait of a wicked seductress who treats men like insects in her web of lies and deceit. The story is a tragic one as well as a haunting one at how much a man would go through when entranced by a beautiful woman. Using her beauty to get what she wants, 'The Vamp' uses up John for mere pleasure. By the end she's laughing over his corpse as she sprinkles rose petals on him. See more 09/20/2009 It's your basic "evil woman seduces and destroys a weak man, despite the efforts of his valiant friends and long suffering wife." However, Theda Bara plays her defining vamp role to perfection. See more 03/18/2009 Obviously it's an early silent and possesses a continuity that adheres to that so it does retain a certain disorientation. But if watch it through you get a strange and interesting story. Theda Bera alone, though, has a really undeniable presence and pull. Plus you got a groundbreaking story for the time about a "Vamp" that although doesn't suck out a man's blood, but sucks out his life for seemingly no gain other than the pleasure of causing his destruction.
