Audience Member "For Once In My Life" is the uplifting 2010 SXSW Audience Award winning documentary about the First Rate, Goodwill Industries of South Florida Band comprised of a group of people with various degrees of physical, mental and emotional disabilities and challenges. I've seen the documentary before on local South Florida PBS television, but it can also be seen via Amazon and iTunes. Your spirit and soul will profit from watching. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Sheldon O The film is an excellent documentary that provides greater insight about people with different disabilities and how they can realize their unused potential for achievements and improved self-concepts. The film is not only educational, but it is easy to follow, provides inspiration, and creates uplifting feelings. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/20 Full Review Audience Member Very good and inspirational doc Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member At some point, every one of us has been told that we "can't" do something because we lack the talent, drive, motivation, or skills to do it. The members of the Spirit of Goodwill Band in Miami have heard "you can't do that" their whole lives. The band members all have disabilities, some very severe. In "For Once in My Life," we meet the members of the Spirit of Goodwill Band, and discover the amazing spirit that the members of this band possess. The challenges they face are significant-- overcoming their physical and developmental disabilities and overcoming the stigma that their disabilities present. "For Once in My Life" is an inspirational tale that has won audience awards at film festivals nationwide. While its approach to the subject matter is very traditional, it also inspires. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member For Once In My Life is a typical life-affirming documentary. It is not a new theme for a doc to show underdogs overcomong adversity and becoming quite good at something. It's essentially the same documentary as Young@Heart from a few years ago except with different obstacles. I am by no means belittleing the feats of the people featured. They are trully inspiring figures, but the documentary about them does not really bring anything new to the table. Towards the end, the instructor states that there is no other band like this in the US. The Kids of Widney High have been doing this for almost 2 decades. For Once In My Life is enjoyable and touching, but you are most likely going to feel like you've seen this movie a hundred time arleady. You would be better served finding a way to see the band if they ever perform live to ticketed audiences. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
