James Marsh South China Morning Post Despite an all-star Chinese cast, writer-director Li Fangfang's ode to Tsinghua University graduates is a lumbering and sluggish ordeal that yields little reward for audiences. Rated: 1/5 Sep 20, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Very thought provoking and beautifully filmed with exceptional attention to detail. While the movie may have a patriotic flavor which may be distasteful to some, it can use this method which is more accessible to the target audience, to bravely explore sensitive issues that are likely rarely touched on in Chinese movies. The four stories from different eras are cleverly connected and, for those who like historical movies, the film uses the love story cleverly as a vehicle to portray the excesses of the cultural revolution and a society gone mad on witch hunts. The fact that many really were killed in similar fashion to Zhang ziyi's 'trial' makes the story all the more disturbing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
