Scott Weinberg FEARnet A clever indie noir/horror that feels like someone really loves Angel Heart. So at least they have good taste. May 8, 2014 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Fractured a.k.a. Schism Published May 12, 2014 | By The Blue Took - By Bryan Stumpf Writer/director Adam Gierasch and co-writer/wife Jace Anderson have amassed a solid roster of horror films, including Toolbox Murders, Autopsy, and Fertile Ground. Gierasch has described his and Anderson's latest film Fractured a.k.a. Schism as "more personal" than previous efforts. Proving their versatility, Gierasch and Anderson veer from horror to create a film noir with touches of Jacob's Ladder-type mind-bending. Yet Gierasch doesn't venture far from his horror roots - there are several jump scares and terrifying visuals. After waking from a coma with amnesia, Dylan White (Callum Blue) begins to have terrifying nightmares that hint at a criminal and violent life before his coma. Piecing together clues from the nightmares, he heads to a seedy shore town in Louisiana, searching for memory-triggering fragments. He meets several unsavory types who draw him deeper into his dark past and towards a crossroads of redemption - redemption both real and perhaps supernatural.sct Gierasch revels in his lurid palette, with pitch black shadows, neons soaked in Bayou mist, and sequences seemingly Dario Argento-inspired. Yet at times, the lighting is arrestingly beautiful...and sexy. At an insalubrious Bayou bar, Dylan is compelled to light the cigarette of Marlena (Nicole LaLiberte), who sports enough tattoos and nicotine stains to more than hint she's his "femme fatale." LaLiberte is sexier than hell in Bettie Page bangs and red hot pumps. And Blue keeps up with LaLiberte, aptly bringing his acting versatility to the fore, not unexpected with the film's title suggesting several distinct identities within our protagonist. And the always intimidating Vinnie Jones plays a villain more vicious than anything we've seen in recent horror movies. Some of the performances don't quite find their place in the cross-pollinating genres, but Blue and LaLiberte solidly anchor the material. Gierasch and Anderson stay faithful to sultry Southern detective noir while adding their own twisty signature to it. With Fangoria calling Fractured one of the best independent movies of 2014, Gierasch and Anderson ably weave an intense, unsettling affair not for the squeamish. I lost interest in the movie after watching a couple of minutes of the main character walking around daydreaming. I haven't got a clue about what was happening from one scene to the next and I gave up trying to work out the plot. The acting was terrible, along with the whole dark theme which made the movie even harder to follow. I think you can tell that I really didn't enjoy this film and I found it a complete waste of time. Rubbish! Round-Up: I haven't got a clue why the distributors decided to stick Vinnie Jones's face all over the poster because he isn't really in it. The guy who plays the main character was a bad choice by the director because his style of acting was boring and pretty dead. Even when the whole plot unfolds at the end, it still is a really badly made movie which was over complicated and totally crap. I recommend this movie to people who are into there psychological dramas about a man who wakes up out of a coma with no idea about who he is. 1/10 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a fairly pedestrian horror movie trying to morph itself into noir. It fails in the attempt. The supernatural elements don't really tie the story together. I see that someone compared it to Angel Heart. It does share some elements with Angle Heart including the nudity, sex, violence, amnesia, and the badly fumbled attempt to resolve the story supernaturally. Overall, a waste of time. I might also mention that the description under Movie Info is not this movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews
