Barry Hertz Globe and Mail Frankie Freako is designed to melt your brain. The only question is whether you might welcome such cerebral liquefaction or not. Oct 1, 2024 Full Review Christian Zilko indieWire While the film clearly plays as an homage to the kinds of kid-friendly, horror-adjacent comedies that ruled the ’80s, its charming commitment to a premise whose asininity borders on trolling makes Frankie Freako a distinctly 21st century product. Rated: B Sep 30, 2024 Full Review Katie Rife IGN Movies A self-consciously juvenile pizza party of a movie that's lots of fun if you don’t take it too seriously. Rated: 7/10 Aug 2, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy With Frankie Freako, writer-director Steven Kostanski focuses exclusively on such ‘80s efforts as Gremlins, Ghoulies, Critters, Munchies, and any other franchise featuring malevolent creatures performed by puppets. Rated: 3/4 Nov 9, 2024 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed The nostalgia bait is strong with this one, but it works so why not. This is an entertaining bit of mayhem cinema and one that many will love. Nov 6, 2024 Full Review Aaron Neuwirth We Live Entertainment Frankie Freako doesn’t quite reach the heights of “Iron Giant, but a gory inter-dimensional monster movie,” but it is an amusing take on the “little creatures” style horror movie that gave us such films as Gremlins and Ghoulies. rich s absolutely fantastic. practical effects were amazing. it rode the line of bad writing to being hilarious perfectly. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Adam K Nostalgic of practical effects and animatronic puppers a la Gremlins and Ghoulies, this speaks to the 80s movie kid in many of us. A good time with a mischievous, punk rock attitude, it lets you know that even the most square can find their hippest sides. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Mikey F "Shabadoo" *shrugs unenthusiastically* Fun idea, fairly well-done practical effects, but you can tell the Freakos are not played by experienced puppeteers or actors. In fact, the whole cast is very sub-community-theater level talent- not quite "Birdemic", but not better than "The Room". That said, it's fun once the plot gets going. It doesn't take itself seriously at all, and that leads to some great moments, and the 3rd act makes the mediocre/bad parts worth it. It's not an instant classic, but for an small time homage throw back, it's absolutely worth streaming with friends. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/08/24 Full Review Roberto G Steven Kostanski makes movies unique to my enjoyment. This Risky business meets Garbage Pale Kids party hard movie gets every step right. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review TROY S A lighthearted pizza party of a movie from the director of Psycho Goreman that revels in practical puppetry and ’90s nostalgia. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Moody C It’s the really low budget B fare. Script sucks, acting sucks, fx sucks, production quality sucks, story sucks, and movie sucks.
