Critics Consensus

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan charm in Mark Waters' nicely pitched -- and Disney's second -- remake of the 1976 hit.

N P Classic family movie! Freaky Friday's rejuvenated script that updates the themes to our modern-day - perfectly captures the language + costuming + hijinks of both the mom and teenage daughter character. Making it unmistakable who's playing who. Jamie Lee Curtis is excellent as Tess' daughter, Anna. The mannerisms, vocal inflections - she just becomes the character in a charming & exceptional way. Lindsay Lohan's comedic chops and nuances are on display playing her character's mother. They both match each other's performances and have great repertoire. There are definitely some noticeable issues with Jake's, Anna's love interest, relations with both the main leads, as well as the representation of Asian women with exaggerated stereotyping and voodoo fortune cookies, and people who seek mental health help are crazy and "freaks". But, it isn't extreme, something to take note of and avoid in the anticipated sequel. It's a fun-watch all around! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review J. S What!!!??? 58%??? Is this a joke??? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Audience Member A fun film with plenty of laughs. Good performances by Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Based on the 1976 film of the same name. Looking forward to the 2025 sequel freakier Friday. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review molly k Weird But my mom didn't like it at all for the whole Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/11/24 Full Review Blu B One of the rarest exceptions of a modern remake that is not just better than the original but is far superior and a comedy classic. It can't be understated how much this fixes every problem the original had. The acting, cinematography, music, and editing is all solid and way better here. It doesn't even feel like the same movie they completely gutted the story effectively and only kept the bare bone basic premise which was brilliant and commendable as it took a lot of work. Lohan is WAY better than Foster and is solid. But the best thing is Curtis who is really good in this and the best thing, surpassing Harris in the original who was also the best thing. There expressions are so much better as they actually have facial expressions the other would have which was a problem in the first especially with Foster. Where in the original they barely interacted this actually has them interact well over the majority of the time together so the editing is WAY better here and feels way less jumpy and fluid. It doesn't feel like comedic skits but an actual clever story. and the humor is really good also which helps with really good pacing throughout. It also doubles the amount of time we get to learn about them and set the story up, where the first felt very rushed. The only minor issues this has is the humor at first before the switch is alright and a bit flat. Also they do still have a chunk of the middle where they are seperate and while it ties more into the characters learning about the other, it still feels a bit like stuff that just happens sometimes but way better done. It also doesn't have any real deep message other than walking in someone elses shoes which I could say the original slightly did better as this feels more humor heavy oddly enough because it works much better here. Anyone who though, who is a fan of any actors in this, off beat fantasy movies, comedies, or the director, or family flicks will like this. One of the bes remakes of the new millenia.
