Critics Consensus

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan charm in Mark Waters' nicely pitched -- and Disney's second -- remake of the 1976 hit.

Neil Norman London Evening Standard The original made a fairly dire comedy. This version is much better, thanks largely to a sharper script and the performances of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Aug 18, 2008 Full Review John Stark Mac the Movie Guy I’d take this to a desert island with me. Freaky Friday is cinematic comfort food, with a familiarity that plays like your favorite meal, and performances from Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan that make them feel like family. Natasha R The first time I watched this movie I was in high-school. I remember thinking it was funny and relatable; at that time, I was the intended audience for this film. Watching it again as an adult gave me pause a few times. First, the mother is a therapist. She should know not to call her daughter a “harlot” for wanting her cartilage pierced. I would hope that she knows removing the bedroom door is invasive and honestly kind of abusing her parental power; following up with “privacy is a privilege” feels like gaslighting. I didn’t love that their use of the phrase, “strange Asian voodoo” and think that if they added Mandarin subtitles that could have been a fun way for us (the audience) to know what was said. Especially as there is a comment later in the movie asking what they might have said in Mandarin. One part that was extremely cringy to me was when the daughter goes out on a shopping spree in her mom’s body, cuts her hair (the day before her wedding), and gets a piercing. This shows me that her mother did not teacher her about informed consent or boundaries (going back to the door removal, lacking healthy boundaries is a recurring theme for this family). The last thing that bothered me was the inconsistency with the body swap. The first time it happened the only people to feel the earthquake were the mom and daughter and they had to sleep on it for the switch to occur. When they switched back everyone felt it and it was instant. I’m sure the writers implied that the switch was SO big this time that it happened quick, perhaps the empathy and understanding they finally had was large enough to make the switch instantly…who knows. I think that this being a kid’s movie, they also had to switch bodies quickly so the child wouldn’t have to kiss the new husband on the lips. Now for the fun parts, there were still a few moments that made me smile. When they tried to do the body swap back by running as fast as they could into one another; I laughed so hard. The mother finally seeing that her daughter was not lying about her teacher being unfair with his grading was rewarding. The music was fun, the mutual understanding at the end was endearing, and I think that there are some relatable moments. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review Andrew A. I wanna see grandpa swap with Harry next Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review Rami A "Freaky Friday" is a silly, stupid, predictable, paint-by-numbers cult classic film that can drag out at times with its ridiculous dialogue. Although I shouldn't be surprised, especially since this is a Disney movie for teenagers. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/16/25 Full Review Rohaan P This movie has a great story and it was really funny. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/16/25 Full Review Horror fan 4 A wonderful funny comedy with 2 great performances by Curtis and Lohan. Tim Treakle Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/14/25 Full Review Emily B I just watched this and it was hilarious. I think I watched it a long time ago but I forgot about it. I love the part when the “mom” called the little brother a punk. I also love the part where the “mom” is on the motorcycle with Anna’s boyfriend. This is honestly one of the most hilarious movies I’ve watched in a long time. Letter grade B Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/13/25 Full Review Read all reviews
