This gave me some Friday the 13th Part 5 vibes. The main character has powers and mental issues, which reminded me of Tommy. After Part 6, this honestly feels like a step backward. I absolutely hate Melissa. She made my blood boil every time she was on screen. Some of the kills are solid and more violent than the earlier movies. I didn't mind the supernatural angle either. It wasn't amazing, but it was fine. I still don't understand why these movies refuse to show the kills. Jason had a weed whacker with a blade on the end, and they build up to him hitting someone in the stomach for two seconds before cutting away. Like, what are we doing? Overall, this is better than Part 5 and probably around the level of Parts 2 and 3. It's solid enough, even if it follows the same formula. The characters are fine, but nobody’s all that interesting, and while there are plenty of kills, not many of them are especially memorable. It’s a shame the MPAA hacked up so much of the gore, because you can tell a lot more was originally there. It’s got a nice malevolent atmosphere, and the soundtrack goes a long way toward keeping things entertaining. Definitely not the worst in the series, but Parts 3, 4, and 6 are still the ones to beat. Tina accidentally resurrects Jason from the bottom of the lake while wishing her deceased father back to life. After Jason goes on a rampage, Tina uses her mind to fight back before her father's spirit emerges to drag Jason back into the depths. Kane Hodder is the definitive, most convincing Jason actor in the franchise, completely nailing the physical presence. The final showdown is highly creative, featuring Tina weaponizing the house by throwing objects, setting Jason on fire, and using a hanging rope and nails against him. While highly entertaining and a personal favorite, it features a slow buildup with Jason only making his first water kill around the 35-minute mark. The telekinesis angle makes it feel less like a traditional Friday the 13th slasher. See more Read all reviews
