      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Fried Green Tomatoes' tearjerking drama is undeniably manipulative, but in the hands of a skilled cast that includes Jessica Tandy and Kathy Bates, it's also powerfully effective.

Tom and Pat Hardy A great movie about the South and Southern people. Some of the funniest lines in any movie, and some of the most heart-breaking scenes.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/23 Full Review Rebecca S Love the movie, I am not a fan of the LBG....movies nowadays that are too self righteous and too much in your face. Here you've got it all: excellent acting, difficult content, silent and smooth undertones. And a lovestory for the books...I needed a hankie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Courtney K it's got a killer cast & everyone plays their parts really well. the story was fine - sadder than i was expecting; not really my jam - but i still liked it well enough. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Lukas S This is my all time favorite movie. It's got everything-comedy, drama, mystery, a fantastic soundtrack, great acting, a wonderful script, and story that will leave you wanting to watch it all over again. One of the most touching, heartfelt pieces I've ever seen. Please watch this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/24 Full Review Ilson Simão S Um filme agradável para assistir com a família, trata de diversos temas e mantem o espectador envolvido durante todo o drama que está rolando e tem boas reflexões. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review Timothy D Fried Green Tomatoes had the kind of overpowering warmth that makes for the sweetest entertainment. The characters are endearing, and the parallel stories are engrossing and empowering. This film does a great job making you forget what you think in order to remember how you feel. Hugo Davenport Daily Telegraph (UK) Do not be deterred by the indigestible title nor, if feministically inclined, by the fact that it is directed by mere man Jon Avnet. It is funny, cleverly constructed, often rather moving, and only occasionally allows sentiment to slop over the bucket. May 20, 2022 Full Review Michael Sragow New Yorker [A] clunky, fraudulent, yet apparently crowd-pleasing laugh-and-tear-jerker. Jun 2, 2014 Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times When a group of actors this gifted and lively tries so good-naturedly to deliver such an obvious message, the audience is left in the position of trying to stop a tidal wave. You may hate yourself for responding, but you're smothered before you know it. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 2, 2014 Full Review Rex Sterling Alabama Forum A compelling and enjoyable movie. May 4, 2023 Full Review Maria Vetrano Gay Community News (Boston) The final and most important question is, is Fried Green Tomatoes worth all the compromise or will you leave the theater forlorn and bleary eyed? Not to worry... it will leave you with that warm, gummy feeling you get when Bette Midler sings a lullabye. May 17, 2022 Full Review Malcolm Johnson Hartford Courant For all of its false touches, its confusions, its incohesiveness and perplexing shifts of tone, there's something wonderfully sweet and zesty about Fried Green Tomatoes.
