Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) [Friedkin] curses all the way through this movie and it's indicative of his filmmaking style -- which was "I don't care, I'm making it my way." Sep 3, 2019 Full Review Glenn Whipp Los Angeles Times Friedkin is an engaging raconteur, even (or especially) when he's rambling through half-formed thoughts... Aug 29, 2019 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com Always a good show, even when the subject is saying things so wild or silly that they make the viewer's eyes roll like tires tumbling down a steep mountainside in Friedkin's jungle thriller Sorcerer. Rated: 3/4 Aug 23, 2019 Full Review Matt Glasby Radio Times It's just a shame this entertaining documentary by his one-time line producer Francisco Zippel isn't as frank as its subject. Rated: 3/5 Aug 13, 2020 Full Review Joshua Brunsting The CriterionCast At best, Friedkin Uncut is a serviceable EPK on whatever Friedkin film is set to get yet another Blu-ray release. Flat, lifeless, superficial. Just a slog. Sep 12, 2019 Full Review Tim Appelo AARP Movies for Grownups The documentary's unskilled neophyte director Francesco Zippel is no Friedkin, but his subject makes this an important part of film history. Dave S While it never really delves too deeply into why William Friedkin was the way he was, Francesco Zippel's Friedkin Uncut is an excellent primer for anyone not familiar with the iconic director's oeuvre. The film alternates between interviews with the always irascible and outspoken Friedkin and those he worked with, focusing primarily on his most productive period, the 70s, where he directed three of the decade's most iconic films – The French Connection, The Exorcist, and Sorcerer. Granted, Zippel feels like he's fawning over his subject at times, pretty much avoiding a two decade period of mediocrity, but Friedkin Uncut remains an interesting viewing experience based simply on the mercurial temperament of the subject.
