Concepción de León New York Times Though Booker’s story and success are inspiring, the documentary falls flat, feeling more like a political tool than a commentary on the state of politics in Kentucky. Sep 29, 2022 Full Review Katie Walsh TheWrap A surprisingly emotional film; this is not just a shiny piece of campaign propaganda. Sep 15, 2022 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix Biographical documentaries about politicians during a political campaign often look like campaign promotional videos, but From the Hood to the Holler avoids that trap by presenting a fairly well-well-rounded portrait of Kentucky politician Charles Booker. Oct 30, 2022 Full Review Joel Fisher Battle Royale With Cheese The politics may be portrayed far more dramatically than anywhere else in the world, but the impact feels just as important. Sep 27, 2022 Full Review Alan French Sunshine State Cineplex If things break right for Booker, this could be an early chapter in a storied political career. From the Hood to the Holler is an entertaining and emotional work, even if it stumbles on occasion. Rated: 7/10 Sep 17, 2022 Full Review Avi Offer NYC Movie Guru Equally provocative and captivating. Michael G A crash course in high stakes politics and fighting for what you believe in. This film takes you on-the-road with Charles Booker as he fights to win over Kentucky voters and reach a common ground between country side and city streets. In a world of corrupt politics, it's very moving to watch a humble politician try to do the right thing! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/22 Full Review Lain E Booker's story is vulnerable and insights change. It shows what you can do with a small amount of passion. It can snowball into a movement. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/03/22 Full Review jeremy p From the Hood to the Holler is an emotional journey through the eyes of a black progressive trying to change the political tide in red Kentucky. This film takes you through a range of emotions while you gain a better understanding of politics on a local level. If you love an underdog story with heart, style, and inside access to the rise of a new leader in American politics this is the film for you. There's still hope out there and this film provides it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review james m I loved this film. Charles Booker is an inspiration and a truly good man. Director Pat McGee and his team do an excellent job of bringing you right onto the bus and into the experience. McGee is a real talent and here's hoping Booker somehow manages to pull of one of the grandest upsets of all time. Great things ahead for both the filmmaker and his subject. See this movie if you want to be inspired. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Liz N I was on the jury for the Woods Hole Film Festival so was able to see it a few months ago. I really loved this movie. It's tight, emotional, beautifully shot and has a fantastic score. And the access is extraordinary. By showing the journey of Charles Booker in his attempt to win the US Senate Democratic primary in Kentucky and thus run against Mitch McConnell in the general election we get a glimpse into what hope in politics feels like in the modern era. I was moved to tears several times - which is big for me since I feel like I've seen a lot of political docs - but through careful direction and a truly remarkable main character we dare to actually believe he can speak truth to power. While it is super depressing that he loses (spoiler alert) it is still an extremely important story. I hope a LOT of people see this film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/28/22 Full Review Audience Member Hopeful, timeless, and important documentation of the Black Lives Matter 2020 era, all through the POV of an unlikely politician turned growing political force to be reckoned with. Oh and the Bernie Sanders cameos are legendary… Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
