Critics Consensus

Gentle and nostalgic, From Up on Poppy Hill is one of Studio Ghibli's sweeter efforts -- and if it doesn't push the boundaries of the genre, it remains as engagingly lovely as Ghibli fans have come to expect.

Guy Lodge London Evening Standard A gently lyrical diversion for Ghibli die-hards ... a gentle snooze for others. Rated: 3/5 Aug 12, 2013 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Beautifully precise architectural sketches, endearingly warm nostalgia, gentle teen romance and genuine intrigue. Rated: 5/5 Aug 2, 2013 Full Review Mike McCahill Guardian It ... arrives with the vast reserves of patience, optimism and artistry we've come to expect from this studio. Rated: 3/5 Aug 1, 2013 Full Review Grace Han Asian Movie Pulse Poppy Hill” is beautiful, but more dull than expected. It would be nice to see Goro Miyazaki engage in stories that actually resonate with him, rather than to follow his father’s script (or footsteps). Rated: 3.5/5 May 25, 2022 Full Review Clement Tyler Obropta Film Inquiry It might not be one of the most well-regarded or well-produced of the studio's films, but it's a high point in Gorō's career and one of the final brushstrokes in his father's, and that's more than enough to justify a visit to Poppy Hill. Jul 17, 2021 Full Review Jordan M. Smith IONCINEMA.com Though From Up On Poppy Hill lacks the magic or pure emotion of some of Ghibli's finest work, Goro's sophomore feature still stands as a testament to why hand drawn animation should never perish in the face of digital wizardry. Daniel J From Up On Poppy Hiil was almost unwatchable for me until about the last thirty minutes. The first hour of this movie was really slow and there was basically no plot, I found myself questioning what the point of this movie was very often. The sound mixing was also horrible, I found that the music was louder than the people talking almost every time any music played. While I did enjoy the last thirty minutes, it was still a very basic plot which Shun even mentioned in the movie saying it was like a cheesy melodrama. This being said, does it really deserve all the hype just because it's a Ghibli film? I don't think so. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review Audience Member Not exactly sure as to why Japan seems so fixated on incest, but here we are. We get to follow a boy and girl, along with their abundant friends, renovate and save their school building from demolition. The plot twist for this: THEY'RE ACTUALLY LONG LOST SIBLINGS!? No, no they're not. In fact they even had to bring the girl's mom back from America, and the boy's dead father's friend to tell the both of them they are in fact not related and can do whatever they want without looking like the Japanese version of the Whittakers. Good news for the girl especially, she seemed the most upset. Other than that we get to see this lively group of kids clean and remodel this old and charming building with so much detail and character. Along with the eye pleasing visuals is a calm and heart warming soundtrack to compliment it. The English dub, recorded by POP Sound, is great as usual with any Studio Ghibli dub. While I would recommend this to any Ghibli fanboys out there, I wouldn't for anyone else, there's much better alternative movies out there. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Erica K This is a popular film I've seen online but never actually watched it, and it was not what i expected. The whole concept of school students, clubs, dedication, and education was really sweet; takes a break from fantasy and sci-fi movies to bring reality into this really well animated movie. However i did NOT expect the whole (SPOILER) crushes...to siblings...to lovers....yeah it was kind of mess and had me questioning a lot about the movie and mixing my emotions with the direction of the 2 main students relationship. In addition this story didn't have anything else to it then school and father/ship lore to the characters, which made the movie a bit boring but is understandable for the time of it being only a hour and 30m (i was expecting more is what I'm trying to say). In conclusion, cute but not the most expressive/best Ghibli movie i would say. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review Charvine A A love story, mixed with other fascinating aspects of the life of young Japanese students. Two young people have to unravel the mystery of their parents' WWII history before they can define their love for each other. Almost heart-wrenching until the happy ending. A gem. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/09/24 Full Review Joshua S Father and son working together. This is the only great film from Goro Miyazaki because his other movies like Tales From Earthsea, Earwig & The Witch are terrible. That’s why Hayao Miyazaki helped his son by making this romantic/coming-of-age story. Without Hayao, this movie will turn out bad. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/30/24 Full Review Johann D. M 🇯🇵 A Studio Ghibli film written by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his son Gorō, this story is set in 1963 Yokohama, Japan, and tells the story of a high school girl living in a boarding house, 'Coquelicot Manor' and a group of teens who look to save their school's clubhouse from the wrecking ball in preparations for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. It is a very sweet and moving story that is just wonderful to look at that may not be as fantastic as other Miyazaki films, this one is deeply realistic, romantic and melodramatic, which is quite refreshing. As usual, the animation is just wonderful, colorful and incredibly precise, even with the most trivial things, such as food. It is quite enjoyable in general, but I'd personally go for the most fantasy-focused films of the studio. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/12/24 Full Review Read all reviews
