Namrata Joshi The New Indian Express We often talk about making films that attempt to find the universal in the local. In the particularity of the Native American experience in Frybread lies the ubiquity of a larger human truth that keeps on echoing in the mind long after the film is over. Dec 19, 2023 Full Review Kate Erbland indieWire Luther’s film may be built on his own coming of age, but there’s both specificity and universality to this story, something for everyone who was ever a kid, Native or not, to connect with. Rated: B Nov 27, 2023 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times The movie is overfamiliar and earnest, but you can’t accuse it of not being heartfelt. Nov 25, 2023 Full Review Jose Solís Common Sense Media But what director Billy Luther does in Frybread Face and Me goes beyond the apparent "city mouse" tropes to turn into something fresh and quietly moving. Jan 10, 2024 Full Review Jeffrey Peterson Geek Vibes Nation The new coming-of-age film from Billy Luther, produced by ARRAY, asks the young Navajo protagonists to share their personal traumas and tragedies as well as those of their family members. Because of this weighty task, the film feels slightly uneven. Jan 1, 2024 Full Review Mark Jackson Epoch Times A wistful, warming tale from the Navajo rez, with Native wisdoms wafting, but also a Trojan horse for normalizing the gender-agenda. Izzy G The acting in this movie is absolutely horrid. I would not recommend watching. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/05/24 Full Review Jonathan R I'm an Anglo who has lived and worked with the Navajo and Pueblos, and this film has the ring of authentic truth: the Grandmother as the heart and base of the family with her traditional values and her outwardly uncompromising refusal to learn and speak English, though she might well understand it and speak it. At the end of the summer, when Benny must return to the city, once in his mother's car he removed his traditional headband and puts on his Mom's cowboy hat. He's transitioning back to city boy, though he will never go back entirely. This film is a continuation of the slowly increasing number of modern-day films about the Native Southwest: "Reservation Dogs," Smoke Signals," "Dark Wind," and others. One reviewer complained about the lack of action, but a great deal is happening and changing, especially in Benny and Dawn. And one thing, among many, that I learned is that important things happen slowly in Pueblo and Navajo homes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/03/24 Full Review Dave V Really boring. I had to turn it off. Just no action whatsoever. No wonder the critics liked it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review dave d Touching and moving and elegantly designed by Billy Luther in his first narrative feature. Based on Luther's experiences, what he put on film evoked many emotions. This film connected with me in a way that it should with most boys who didn't have a traditional up ringing. These characters are well designed and the idea not not subtitle certain things is brilliant. You're not going to know these actors and that works. The lack of polish brings an authenticity. The visuals are stunning, making up somewhat for a lack of words. I laughed, I thought, I cried. Despite it's familiarity, it's a pretty complete film. Final Score: 8.4/10 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Gail O A visit to another world, that just feels right. Beautiful telling. Well acted. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Whimsical, touching and smart! This is a great little slice of life movie that leaves you feeling a warm glow!
