Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) Conservative fans might appreciate its craven faithfulness, but adaptation isn't much fun when it's just approximation, and Fullmetal Alchemist behaves less like cinema than cosplay on a cinema budget. Rated: 2/5 Oct 30, 2017 Full Review Deborah Young The Hollywood Reporter Characters come and go quickly, leaving a feeling that there is too much compression of the multi-episode story. Oct 26, 2017 Full Review Richard Kuipers Variety Following [a] spirited set-up, the story never gains much propulsion or emotional weight. Oct 26, 2017 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse "Fullmetal Alchemist" is an impressive film to look at (minus the blond wigs), but unfortunately, in terms of narrative, characters, and adapting is a mediocre effort. Oct 27, 2019 Full Review Carlos Frigo Cultured Vultures Key aspects of storytelling, character building, and presentation are thrown out the window, and the finished product is a frustrating 135 minutes that feels like Chinese water torture. Rated: 1/10 Oct 24, 2019 Full Review Chris Sawin GeeksHaveGame Just because the visuals are nice in Fullmetal Alchemist doesn't mean we can overlook the lame costume design, the strained acting, or the piss poor representation of a beloved anime and manga series. Zeto B It is a very good movie, based on a work of art of manga and anime. I see that it received a lot of bad reviews, as well as other Japanese adaptations, and I explain why they are wrong. 1) If you notice, most of them praise the fidelity to the original work. But, then they forget that the original series has more than 50 episodes. Do they really expect a 90 minute movie to show you everything that happened in a series of over 50 episodes? 2) None of the reviews take into account that this is only the first installment of a trilogy. 3) Many recognize that it has good effects but, are they aware that the movie cost less than 10 million dollars? 4) Those who complain about "bad acting"... they are just not used to watch Japanese movies. Nothing more. There are several great Japanese actors in the movie. Obviously without much time to shine. A lot to tell in a short time. And there are other minor criticisms like: 5) 'I didn't like the dubbing.' You would have seen it in the original language. 6) 'It wasn't identical to the anime.' It's asking for something impossible. 7) 'It was full of Asian actors in an European setting.' Well, it's a Japanese movie... with Japanese actors. And, to be faithful to the original work, they went to film in Europe. Are they really complaining about that? 8) Someone didn't understand that, when Ed had his real arm, he was inside a dream. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/31/23 Full Review ana luisa u Es muy aburrida el protagonista es aburrido el humor es malo los villanos son olvidables y las peleas se sienten apagadas y efectos son buenos lo único bueno es 2.8 de 10 Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/23 Full Review Suzume S It's a decent re-enaction. Lots of good moments and funny ones too. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/22 Full Review Derek J Corny, cheap, garb. Pure garb with terrible dubbing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/25/22 Full Review Audience Member Śmieszny farbowany blondasek. Dziwacznie przerysowane postacie. Aktorzy znacznie brzydsi i mniej charyzmatyczni niż narysowani. Łopatologiczny. Słaby aktorsko Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member It felt like getting punched in the face for two hours. This film insults fans of the anime to their faces. The characters have little to do with their inspirations, and often explicitly contradict the core of who they're supposed to be. Scenes that were originally dramatic are now dull and emotionless. Even when they copy the script word for word, they somehow manage to suck out all the impact. Dramatic scenes are goofy at best and painful at worst. I actually feel a pit in my stomach after watching it. Time to go rewatch the anime. That one's genuinely one of the best stories ever told, with lovable characters, powerful scenes and a heartwarming message. If you've never watched it before, go watch it now. If you have watched it before, go watch it now anyway. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
