The characters have little to do with their inspirations, and often explicitly contradict the core of who they're supposed to be. Scenes that were originally dramatic are now dull and emotionless. Even when they copy the script word for word, they somehow manage to suck out all the impact. Dramatic scenes are goofy at best and painful at worst. I actually feel a pit in my stomach after watching it. Time to go rewatch the anime. That one's genuinely one of the best stories ever told, with lovable characters, powerful scenes and a heartwarming message. If you've never watched it before, go watch it now. If you have watched it before, go watch it now anyway. See more 12/26/2021 not familiar with anime, manga or any previous incarnaition of this IP... so can only review it on the film's merits... and they are few. The story is mostly boring. Lots of scenes with exposition, and few "fun" scenes taking advantage of the alchemist angle of this Harry-Potter-like environment. The characters lack empathy, urgency and soul. The look and storytelling aspects of this feels like an anime adaptation because characters stand around talking way too much. I was bored through most of this and never felt engaged or attached to any character. Nothing was surprising, interesting or exciting. Too many dream scenes. Too many train scenes. Too much music.
