In this film based on Eva Kanturkova's novella, Jan Chladil (Ludvik Kroner) is a landowner and farmer who openly opposes Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin's proposed collectivist farm policy. For his dissent, he and his wife Matylda (Jaroslava Ticha) are banished from their village, and the government seizes their property. Years later, with Jan on his deathbed, Matylda returns to the town that rejected them to arrange his funeral, which becomes a form of protest all on its own.
