Steve D The script isn't great and it plays a bit too much with reality but the actors do a great job of embodying the famous actors. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/16/23 Full Review jordan m I can see how this would've been derided contemporaneously since memories of the two subjects would've still been fresh, what with several of their movies still being syndicated on TV, but it seems this movie's quality has increased exponentially since then. Brolin & Clayburgh have gained in prestige since appearing here and it no longer feels like they took two no-name actors & had them portray major movie stars. The finer details of the plot are less important as time passes as there've been more biopics that took creative liberties like this one does. More importantly, the comedy has likely only gotten better with time as they relied on slapstick & innuendo, which I can imagine hit a saturated market in '76 but is now rather refreshing. The movie did run a little long and they could've added more emotional heft to the death scene, but in all I really enjoyed watching this one! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I really love this movie. I thought Jill Clayburgh was wonderful as Carole Lombard (if lacking the look a bit), and James Brolin had me doing a double take in a few parts. He really looks and sounds like Clark Gable. Some have said he is doing nothing more than a good impersonation of Clark, and didn't add enough creatively to make the character his own. But I believe that is all you can ask when you are portraying a person as distinctive as Clark was. He did a wonderful job, without turning his performance into a cliche caricature. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Great Biopic movie... I would definately recommend it for any Gable /& or Lombard Fan, of which I am one of many ! Four Star rating for this excellently produced & acted Biopic ! Keep up the good work ! .... Regards from Laura Daitch/ Germering Bavaria Germany (Formerly of Montreal Qc., Cdn.) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Cool n' fun. But everyone seems to hate that movie... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Obviously an attempt to make a film in the style of the 1930s, but the script is just terrible. Pauline Kael New Yorker Gable and Lombard has nothing to say about the movies, about love, or about stardom. It has no point of view whatever. The movie represents upwardly mobile nostalgia -- nostalgia used for its safeness, its uncontroversial, Ford-era nothingness. Oct 31, 2023 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The movie takes a fan-magazine approach to filmmaking - it's all dressing rooms and autograph hounds and world premieres. Rated: 2/4 Apr 30, 2019 Full Review Steve Warren The Barb (Atlanta) If they were out to prove how dull a life of glamour can be, they've done it. May 5, 2023 Full Review Jacoba Atlas Los Angeles Free Press Gable and Lombard goes for the cheap shot at every opportunity and cheats itself of poignancy with its own sense of self-importance. Nov 18, 2019 Full Review Jesús Fernández Santos El Pais (Spain) The movie often ends up in soap opera territory.
