What to Know

Critics Consensus

Christoph Waltz delivers a noteworthy performance in Georgetown, but its muddled satire and tonal misfire demote this starry crime drama to predictably pleasing fare.

Christoph Waltz is such a master at playing debonair and duplicitous manipulator... Go to Full Review

I found it moderately entertaining... Poor Annette Bening was wasted. Go to Full Review

It's silly, but watching Vanessa Redgrave get wooed by a younger man -- Christoph Waltz is laying on the charm -- is nice. Go to Full Review

Annette Bening in particular sorely underused as Redgrave's disapproving daughter. Waltz is the exception... he delivers a masterclass of charm with an undercurrent of evil. Go to Full Review

True-ish crime drama has strong language, domestic abuse. Go to Full Review

Solid performances from Waltz, Redgrave and Benning help sell this story that almost feels otherworldly. But its craziness is part of what makes it so compelling, and it’s what keeps you glued to the screen even during its rocky patches. Go to Full Review

Susan S 05/18/2021 Great cast and interesting story! See more Susan J 05/17/2021 Redgrave made the movie for me. She is the consummate actress. Christoph Waltz was outstanding as "butler", as she called him. I was less impressed with Annette Bening. Her portrayal of the disgruntled daughter was the weakest character. She needs to work on facial expressions. I clicked the star (4), but it would not allow it to show up. See more PERCY B @P.BADINAGE Jun 28 A much better movie than these % numbers would have you believe. Christopher Waltz is great as both director and star. He's always amazing and Vanessa Redgrave is acting gold, always. What makes this movie so good is that it's based on actual events with dramatic license. But the story is so fascinating that there are con artists among us like this certifiable lunatic and smart people still fall for their obvious con. And it keeps happening. A true lesson in human nature and a movie done not only very well but a very enjoyable watch. See more Alain E @AlainE May 31 I lived in Nebraska and working long hours when the actual events transpired and apparently never heard of this story until today. The opening scene of the movie feels utterly fake and in a way it is ingenious because the story is about a deception in the nth degree. Other than the daughter played by Benning, all other characters demonstrate various human weaknesses. The protagonist is a decorated brigadier general of the Iraqi army, a proud graduate of the Walter Mitty branch in West Point. He marries a much older socialite journalist who despite recognizing his flaws, ultimately finds him preferable to solitude and pays a heavy price. No major flaws in acting or photography. See more Deepika V @deepikav12 Nov 19 Loved this movie. Hard to not like Waltz's characters, even if they are negative, as he brings charm and charisma to the roles. He acted well in this movie. A mix of thriller and drama. It was also directed really well, by him. The pacing was smooth, and led to a dramatic finish. See more Alec B @Alec97 01/10/2024 There's a bluntness to the narrative I appreciate. Mott is so obviously a grifter and the elite D.C. spaces he infiltrates are populated by people who firmly believe they could never be grifted which makes them the perfect target for someone who has ambition without much intelligence.
