Pauline Kael The New Republic Even that sense of discomfort, of puzzlement, evaporates, because it is all made trivial -- Georgy’s pain as well as her bright remarks. Sep 19, 2023 Full Review Wendy Michener Maclean's Magazine Georgy Girl is from the life's-a-giggle school of comedy, and Lynn Redgrave larks about non-stop, exhibiting a talent for mimicry with overtones of Joyce Grenfell. Jun 27, 2019 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com A charming comedy reflecting the mores of the 1960s swinging London, Georgy Girl has not dated particularly well, but the acting is good, particularly Lynn Redgrave in the lead and James Mason in the supporting role. Russ G A rather depressing movie so if you thought it would be light comedy based on the upbeat title tune, you're in for a rough ride. Looking at it objectively, the majority of the British population had it pretty rough for decades; few Americans know that there was still FOOD RATIONING well into the 1950's, as the former empire had collapsed and the nation was dead broke. There weren't U-boats torpedoing convoys of supply ships, just not enough foreign exchange to pay for food imports. If America's working class had it tough, our British cousins had it tougher. Watch it if you must but don't tell me I didn't warn you. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/14/22 Full Review Audience Member A wonderful exposition of an Age of Innocence that was about to be torn asunder. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A disappointment to me. I didn’t think it was funny. Could have been really good. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/07/21 Full Review steve d I thought the story dragged. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Wonderful flick and iconic of its time. Yes its dated but all films become dated. For anyone able to see deeper, this is still a beautiful film. The precursor to so many others (Muriel’s Wedding). Redgrave is moving and tremendous. Bates is also in top form. The people they play never gets dated. Of course the song makes it all worthwhile too. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/19 Full Review Audience Member What could have been an utterly predictable bit of rom-com fluff was saved by some unforeseen plot detours and the great acting of Redgrave and Bates. Rampling does a pretty great job of being thoroughly beastly thanks to her unvarnished honesty ("I've already destroyed two of yours") and that last shot of her walking down the street with that little curl of a smile to be the object of all those men's stares is wonderful. Redgrave's moments of beauty are counterbalanced perfectly by her neediness and tunnel vision once the baby comes into the picture and Bates' antics are equal parts endearing and annoying. Kind of like some real people. However the characters of Georgy's father and his employer are a bit flat and anyone who thought that was a happy ending should note that Georgy's entire attention is for the baby and old James clearly sees what he's gotten himself into. The movie is entertaining without escaping a certain constriction that keeps it from genuinely examining choices we sometimes make without really thinking things through. Still....see it if only to swing along with London in the 60's. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
