Defying her conventional in-laws, young widow Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) leaves London with her young daughter and moves away for a quieter life in a secluded seaside cottage. Lucy discovers the ghost of the deceased former owner, sea captain Daniel Gregg (Rex Harrison), is haunting the house, but gathers the courage to stand up to him, and woman and ghost become friends. Faced with dwindling means of support, Lucy agrees to the Captain's challenge to write his colorful life story.

What a perfect film which starts out whimsically and ends up seriously with an apt ending. Ok the happy ending was predictable. The whole cast are just right including the bumbling estate agent. Great family film for a wet Sunday afternoon.

I surprised myself by liking it as much as I did. Usually, I'm not a fan of old-fashioned love stories. But this kept me involved. And I loved the ending.

I loved this film when I was young. I just watched it today as an escape--I cried twice! During a 1947 ghost movie! The chemistry between Tierney and Harrison makes this a fantastic romantic story (think Heathcliff and Cathy only in reverse).

Romance of a kind that you just do not see today.Wonderful story that just propels you to see the next installment None of this would be possible without the superb acting of Gene Tierney Rex Harrison and George SandersDo not forget the unforgettable direction of Joseph Mankiewicz.. A classic and unforgettable at that. Masters of the craft rarely come together like this.
