What to Know

Critics Consensus

With a weak script, uneven CG work, and a Nic Cage performance so predictably loony it's no longer amusing, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance aims to be trashy fun but ends up as plain trash.

Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle Cage appears to find his role as this second-tier Marvel Comics antihero alternately silly, tremendously fun, and the means to a decent paycheck for not all that much work. Rated: 1.5/5 Feb 24, 2012 Full Review Elizabeth Weitzman New York Daily News Whether Cage is still paying off castles, appeasing the IRS, or rebuilding his comic book collection, it's clear he's decided, for now, to trade his talent for cold, hard cash. Rated: 2/5 Feb 18, 2012 Full Review Andrew Barker Variety Spirit of Vengeance is weighted down for long stretches in the middle, as it starts to treat its own religious hokum plotline with undue seriousness. Feb 18, 2012 Full Review Joseph Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast The film revs and stalls, swerving between gritty and silly, with scorching action but a clichéd story, with fiery performances but burned out dialogue. Rated: 3/5 Oct 25, 2023 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Leans into the campier elements of the character and Nicolas Cage, along with the directors, seems to be having a total blast and that comes across on screen. Rated: 3/5 Sep 24, 2023 Full Review Iván Kazi EscribiendoCine This time, contrary to the first installment, the film is more entertaining for its fight sequences than for being a story about a blazing avenger. Bob F The camera work and directorship? If that's a word, seemed way off .I felt like it was a B movie with a big budget that didn't know how to accomplish its goal . Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review TheMovieSearch R Let’s be honest — Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance arrived during a time when Marvel hadn’t yet found its cinematic rhythm. This was the pre-MCU era, before Kevin Feige’s universe-building genius, before audiences came to expect grounded storytelling and character-driven spectacle. Back then, superhero films were still struggling to balance tone, style, and substance — and unfortunately, this sequel proves just how unsteady those foundations were. Nicolas Cage returns as Johnny Blaze, the tortured stuntman cursed to transform into the fiery Ghost Rider, but the magic from the first film has completely evaporated. While the original at least offered a sense of novelty — a fresh, supernatural antihero unlike any other — Spirit of Vengeance feels lifeless. Cage, while eccentric as always, delivers a performance so detached it borders on parody. His line delivery lacks conviction, and the character never once feels grounded in pain or purpose. For a figure as tormented as Johnny Blaze, that absence of emotional depth is fatal. The screenplay is an outright disaster — thinly written, structurally weak, and painfully predictable. The plot drags from one uninspired action scene to the next without any real momentum. Every line of dialogue feels like it was written out of obligation rather than intent. The film mistakes noise for intensity and chaos for storytelling. Within minutes, you find yourself waiting for it to end — not because it’s shocking or thrilling, but because it’s utterly hollow. Even the visuals, which should’ve been the film’s saving grace, fail to impress. The once-imposing Rider now looks cartoonish, and the flames — which should symbolize both damnation and redemption — come off as cheap CGI flare. There’s no menace, no awe. The direction from Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor feels as though they were chasing style without ever capturing substance. It’s loud, frantic, and exhausting — like an early ’90s action flick lost in time. There’s an interesting concept buried somewhere beneath the wreckage — the idea of redemption, of the devil’s bounty hunter turning against his own curse. But this movie never commits to exploring it. Instead, Spirit of Vengeance plays like an unwanted sequel desperately trying to cash in on the first film’s modest success. At the end of the day, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is the kind of movie that makes you understand why this version of the character never returned. It’s messy, uninspired, and ultimately forgettable. Marvel has since evolved far beyond this era — and if Ghost Rider ever does make his way into the MCU, let’s hope they give him the justice he deserves. For now, this sequel is best left in the ashes. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review Estuard F Tiene potencial y merecia mas. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review thiago s Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/04/25 Full Review Lia P After an honest initial rewatch of this movie, I do agree why some people didn’t like this movie but as rewatching it I kinda of enjoy it. The story is abit dull but with nic performance i can say he did make an improvement from the first one yet why did he change accents. Overall looking back on this movie with the CGI it’s better than movies today there’s something different with today’s movies maybe budget who knows. But this movie has changed my mind I hope Nic reprises his role some day to pass the torch on to another actor. Good movie Poorly written by still entertaining with nic being crazy Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/25 Full Review Mitch B Not as fun as the first, a little more somber, but I still enjoyed it.
