Rated 4/5 Stars •  Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/04/25 Full Review Gabriel S Ghost Stories is one of those films that deceive with its apparent simplicity, a low age rating, at least the version I watched was marked PG-12, and modest names, although Martin Freeman is a known face. But the engaging narrative and intriguing plot reveal a well-constructed and surprisingly good film for horror fans. Don't be fooled: Ghost Stories is scary. The story follows the skeptical Professor Phillip Goodman, who dedicates his life to unraveling and debunking supernatural phenomena through the lens of reason, in an unconscious attempt to make up for his troubled childhood with an extremely religious father. However, everything takes a twisted turn when a famous skeptic hands Goodman three impossible cases, claiming that not even he could find the logic behind the facts. Goodman embodies the classic main character in ghost stories: the skeptic who needs to believe. His fragility contrasts with his determination to prove that the cases are merely the products of disturbed minds, a common neurosis in people with a mentality afflicted by personal traumas. We quickly begin to doubt whether Goodman should maintain this skepticism. The segment in Tony's house, the individual from the second case, is sensational. Until then, the story was light, calm, but that house... Chilling! From that point on, the film takes on a dark tone that remains until its conclusion. The narrative arc closes satisfactorily, with an unpredictable but fitting final twist. Everything makes sense in the end. This film is an adaptation of a play of the same name created by the directors, who contributed as writers in both cases. Easy to say that both deserve due respect. It has a great cast, with great scenery and moves along at a perfect pace. Can't say too much otherwise "spoilers" .... but pay attention. Fab story well acted. There is some humour which I appreciated, particularly the boy in the car in the woods - made us literally laugh out loud. Watched with my son 2 days ago and we're still talking about it. The ending of any film splits an audience in half. This one for me, although at first I was a bit disappointed I've mulled it over and it's actually pretty satisfying. Going over it I'm not sure how it could have ended better tbh...and it explains events which happen through the film and theres a sad morality to it. There's two films it reminds me of but I don't want to say in case it spoils the viewing for some....one involves a tornado and one is generally shown at Christmas. Sit back - or on the edge of your seat - and give it a go. We found it really enjoyable. 😉 Rated 4.5/5 Stars •  Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review Aidan B An extremely enjoyable and oftentimes frightening experience, "Ghost Stories" makes up for a lackluster ending by having enjoyable horror moments throughout. Jump scares became a bit excessive, though, and I thought that the movie fell into many typical horror tropes, as well as landed on a bit of a flat note for me.
