Glenn Kenny New York Times "Everybody needs a place to rest," Bruce Springsteen sings in one of his 1980s hits. This movie is a strong depiction of people who've richly earned such a place. Aug 27, 2020 Full Review Ty Burr Boston Globe The film is unexpectedly beautiful and hushed, the soundtrack unadorned except for occasional passages of Brecht Ameel's acoustic guitar and the cries of nighttime birds. Rated: 3/4 Aug 27, 2020 Full Review Keith Watson Slant Magazine Bas Devos's film is a street-lit trek through the eerily empty avenues and byways of a city at sleep. Rated: 3/4 Aug 23, 2020 Full Review Paul Attard In Review Online Ghost Tropic doesn't level much of an immediate impact but instead floats comfortably between the cracks of one's consciousness. Jun 5, 2021 Full Review Dustin Chang ScreenAnarchy I've seen some gorgeous nighttime cinematography in my time but nothing imbues more urban loneliness and isolation than images presented in Ghost Tropic. Oct 23, 2020 Full Review Robin Clifford Reeling Reviews Devos goes way back in technology to 16mm Kodak film to capture the rich graininess of nighttime as he follows Khadija on her journey. isla s This film features looming urban surroundings in the dark of night that seem potentially threatening. There's not too much dialogue - its quiet a lot of the time, which may put some people off. I can see why some people compare it to 'A Girl Who Walks Home Alone at Night'. If anything, the lack of people out and about in such a surely bustling city during the day makes it seem spookier maybe. It may seem a bit bland to some but I liked it. I liked the wide panning camera shots used to show how vulnerable/isolated Khadija was. It's undoubtedly a slow moving film which will bore some but it has its plus points - I particularly liked the stringed instruments played quietly in the background, adding an extra sense of fragility. It stood out due to how quiet other scenes were, comparitively. This film won't appeal to all but I liked it and I suppose it's an example of a film in which 'less is more'.
