In response to political pressure from Senator Lillian DeHaven (Anne Bancroft), the U.S. Navy begins a program that would allow for the eventual integration of women into its services. The program begins with a single trial candidate, Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil (Demi Moore), who is chosen specifically for her femininity. O'Neil enters the grueling training program under the command of John James Urgayle (Viggo Mortensen), who unfairly pushes O'Neil until her determination wins his respect.

Critics Consensus

Demi Moore admirably does her duty, but G.I. Jane's well-intentioned message is obscured by stylistic bombast and an overload of jingoism.

James M This was a great movie. It's a classic! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Ananda J I don't know how anyone could rate this movie a half a star. Demi Moore killed in this. I'd like to see any starlet today go after it like this and get it done. superb. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/24 Full Review Audience Member Over 25 years old, I remember watching it years ago Demi Moore stars as Lieutenant Jordan O’ Neil who is recruited by senator Lillian DeHaven to join a newly inserted program allowing women to join the US Navy Yet she’s only chosen for her femininity under John Jaymes Urgale’s command She’ll not only have to prove she’s capable but prove to earn the respect But Jordan also has to combat the standards of making a statement about a woman not just joining the services because of her gender but because she is capable period This is like Jingoism meets hardcore feminism while shedding light on expanding roles for women in combat Still one of my favorite films of Ridley Scott and one of my favorite performances from Demi Moore even though she regrets shaving her head for the role Today though she keeps her hair long to defy stereotypes Her performance was praised despite mixed reviews and the movie only making $50 million but it became a cultural legacy standing against the sexual politics Her character struggles to gain acceptance from her male counterparts in the navy seals fighting the sexism and chauvinistic bureaucracy One of Viggo Mortensen's earliest roles pre-Lord of the Rings Who knew this movie would serve as a prelude to Chris Rock’s punchline made at this years Oscar's? Scott struggled with constant rewrites and actually got to work with the NAVY seals Female military officers even write this day to the director praising his direction and the ongoing fight against misogyny A really good effort by Scott and Moore Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/23/23 Full Review Devin B Great action throughout and DemI Moore does a phenomenal job in the lead role of the movie! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/25/23 Full Review Glitched G If you don't think about it logically GI Jane is a fun ride. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/04/23 Full Review Steve D Seems like everyone is trying too hard. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
