In this comedic drama, a group of amateur musicians gathers on a weekly basis to play jazz. The ensemble's membership ranges from car salesman Marty Flynn (Wayne Rogers), who plays trombone, to egotistical music instructor and clarinetist Aaron Wohl (Jerry Matz). When the band scores a professional gig at a resort in the Catskills, Flynn and the group rally to make it their best performance yet, with experienced player Marshall Wilson (Cleavon Little) reluctantly joining to round out the unit.

Audience Member Amazing portrayal of weekend warrior musicians in New York in the 1980's, Cleavlon Little steals the movie as an African-American Musician called in at the last minute to play bass for two weeks with a band of Middle-aged White Collar White guys to whom the world of professional musicianship is a fantasy. This film is so accurate in it's portrayal of middle aged pickup bands and country clubs, the melodrama of the individuals in the Band is mostly filler, though there is some great philosophical bantering between the Bassist and the rest of the Band, which includes Wayne Rogers as a schmoozing used car salesman/Trombonist and real life Jazz Musician Warren Vache as a professional cornet player. The dialogue is glib, accurate and also laugh out loud funny, Joe Silver is whimsical as the owner of the resort where THE GIG takes place. You will be surprised how engrossed you are with THE GIG. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I simply LOVE this movie. This should be mandatory viewing for every music student, musician wannabe and anyone entertaining thoughts of going into this business. Gilroy has a spot-on impression of the totally different worlds inhabited by amateur and professional musicians. My only criticism: for a group of amateur wannabes, these guys play REAL good on the soundtrack. But it's not easy to get John Bunch, Major Holley et al to sound bad!!!!
