Ty Burr Ty Burr's Watch List (Substack) It captures the gentle hilarity with which Gottfried moved through life but also the immense affection in which he was held by his wife and children, his fellow comedians, and strangers in the street. Rated: 3.5/4 Apr 15, 2022 Full Review David Ehrlich indieWire The last thing the world needs right now is another portrait about the fraternity of comedians and their hardscrabble existence as America's schlubbiest road warriors... but "Gilbert" rises above the glut thanks to the strength of its subject. Rated: B Aug 14, 2018 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times In Neil Berkeley's fascinating, very funny and sometimes quite melancholy "Gilbert," we get to see the hunched-over, eccentric, surprisingly thoughtful man behind the comedic myth... Rated: 3.5/4 Nov 30, 2017 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review I found myself truly moved by the movie and by the artistry of the man's work. He makes it look brash and vulgar, but it's a finely tuned, boundary-pushing performance piece. May 20, 2020 Full Review Andy Crump The Playlist It's authoritative only to a point, but that doesn't keep it from being utterly compelling all the same. Rated: B+ Aug 14, 2018 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com A fascinating look at a seemingly meek guy who lives to offend, highlighting career experiences and family ties, creating a portrait of a beloved funnyman that's, at its best, eye-opening. Brent H Absolutely a must see. Whoever filmed this documentary is brilliant. It shows so many sides that will surprise you about Gilbert. He is a devout family man and quite a soft guy. The world lost a truly one of a kind when he passed away. RIP Gilbert! 😀 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Funny, tender, and insightful look at the comedian. (Full disclosure: I think he’s hilarious.) Amazing to realize his entire on stage persona is a finely crafted performance piece. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/22/20 Full Review Audience Member Great He's a generational talent well portrayed Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member A Very touching & intimate look into Gilbert’s life and career. Dara and his children are just delightful. A great watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/18 Full Review Audience Member Gilbert finally settled down. For one hour and forty goddam minutes. A bit one-note on the family stuff but interesting to see G with the mask *slightly* down. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/18 Full Review Audience Member Just a really sweet movie. Gilbert is a deeply social person who has a hard time communicating with people. A peek behind the curtain of his stage persona. Relatable and sweet.
