In New York, Italian-American builder Geremio (Sam Wanamaker) reflects on the last several years. Nine years earlier, Geremio is marrying Annunziata (Lea Padovani) despite being in love with her sister, Kathleen (Kathleen Ryan). He fools his new wife into believing he has a house, and then spends the next several years working recklessly to save for one -- only to be ruined in the stock market crash.
