      Critics Consensus

While not everyone will be entertained by Gladiator's glum revenge story, Russell Crowe thunderously wins the crowd with a star-making turn that provides Ridley Scott's opulent resurrection of Rome its bruised heart.

Robert N one of the most badass movies i have ever scene Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Bob B One of my all time top films. For me this is the film that defines 'epic'. Fantastic story full of emotion, love it! Also the music score is perfect. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/24 Full Review Sam Y Greatest movie ever. Russel Crowe prove why he is the best Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Audience Member A good movie for 12 yr old boys. It is beautiful and Crowe is good. But this has all been done before. It is made for those who will not watch Spartacus or any of the countless better films it rehashes. The CGI is cheap looking. And how exactly does Maximus get (injured) from territory that is now Germany, across the Alps, across the Pyrenees, and deep into Iberia, before magically being found by the Moors? How does Commodus kill Richard Harris without Harris showing any struggle? The action slows down for self important reflective sounding music. Including Celtic sounding pretentious theme music. Again, its ok to good, but its a rehash of whats been done much better, for the adolescent movie mindset. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Michael S The greatest film of all time. A story of man. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/24 Full Review Tijs v Great movie, great soundtrack and a solid ending. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Stephen Hunter Washington Post It is an honorable movie, so are they all honorable movies. But that's not enough. It's not great. It's a disappointment. Caesar hates disappointment, so kill it swiftly and be done. Nov 2, 2022 Full Review Bill Muller Arizona Republic The new film has spectacular fight scenes in dazzling sets and a familiar story about honor and betrayal, courage and cowardice. It's the perfect vehicle for some old-fashioned sword-clanging fun. Rated: 3/5 Nov 2, 2022 Full Review Dean Lamanna Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com Gladiator delivers everything its title promises. The surprise is that this bold revival of the period "sword-and-sandals" epic does so with solid acting, sure pacing and superior style interspersed with payoff-worthy pathos. Rated: 4/5 Nov 2, 2022 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia As a sword and sandal epic, it still holds the exciting pulse to this day with Russell Crowe's magnificent performance and its emotional story about the Roman gladiator who fights as a liberator against a corrupt emperor. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 8/10 Apr 14, 2024 Full Review Adrían Massanet Espinof Russell Crowe takes ownership of his character and gives him an immeasurable truth and sadness. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 2.5/5 Dec 19, 2023 Full Review Chuck Klosterman Akron Beacon Journal The individual performances are great and the images are stunning, and -- perhaps most important -- Gladiator offers an escapist quality that makes its derivative flaws seem minor.
