Critics Consensus

While not everyone will be entertained by Gladiator's glum revenge story, Russell Crowe thunderously wins the crowd with a star-making turn that provides Ridley Scott's opulent resurrection of Rome its bruised heart.

Adam Nayman The Ringer The same sturdy conventionality that made Gladiator a hit means that it’s built to last without standing particularly tall. With apologies to Ridley Scott, it holds up fine without echoing into eternity. Nov 21, 2024 Full Review Stephen Hunter Washington Post It is an honorable movie, so are they all honorable movies. But that's not enough. It's not great. It's a disappointment. Caesar hates disappointment, so kill it swiftly and be done. Nov 2, 2022 Full Review Bill Muller Arizona Republic The new film has spectacular fight scenes in dazzling sets and a familiar story about honor and betrayal, courage and cowardice. It's the perfect vehicle for some old-fashioned sword-clanging fun. Rated: 3/5 Nov 2, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy One of the slighter films to ever win the Best Picture Oscar. Rated: 3/4 Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Greg MacArthur Screen Rant As iconic as Ridley Scott's Gladiator is, a better film would exist beneath its legendary dialogue and battle scenes in the form of a sharper script. R V. Maximus Decimus Meridius is one of the great movie characters because he embodies dignity in the face of betrayal. Russell Crowe gives him a commanding presence without ever overplaying it. He’s a general who becomes a slave, a slave who becomes a gladiator, and a gladiator who challenges an empire. He doesn’t seek revenge for its own sake. He acts out of loyalty to a murdered emperor and love for a family he’s lost. That combination of personal grief and unshakable honor gives Maximus a quiet power that defines every scene he’s in. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/05/25 Full Review Paul B. This is my favorite movie of all time. I love everything about this classic from start to finish. Saw it in the theatre twice when it was first released and watch it multiple times every year. Maybe another movie will beat it out as my favorite one day but not yet, not yet. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/05/25 Full Review Carlos H In 2025, I decided to fill one of the gaps in my life as a movie buff: watch the film Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe. I finally understood the critical and commercial acclaim the film garnered, in addition to, of course, its Oscar wins. The film's script is extremely well-constructed and makes us care about all the characters, especially the protagonist, whose development is one of the best I've ever seen. Ridley's direction is inspired, with memorable scenes in the Roman Colosseum. The cinematography is also a highlight, with scenes that resemble a painting, especially those highlighting the green fields, the mountainous landscape, and the blue sky. The soundtrack is memorable, and through it, we can sense the grandeur of the action and battles throughout the film. Joaquin Phoenix delivers a dangerous and multifaceted villain, who murdered his own father to declare himself Emperor of Rome and who courts his own sister in his desperate search for attention and devotion. I regret it took me so long to see this film, but no more so than not seeing it in theaters. In 2000, I was just a kid, and my film tastes were limited to Disney, Jurassic Park, and superhero movies. Those who were lucky enough, however, must have had an epic cinematic experience, which is what this film provides. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/04/25 Full Review Jian B The inaccuracies do not bother me, and should not bother you either unless you're a nerd. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/29/25 Full Review Andrew B Gladiator is pure entertainment from start to finish. In a quintessential movie star performance, Russell Crowe brings charisma, sparkle, and depth to the stoic Maximus. He plays opposite an equally brilliant and disturbing Joaquin Phoenix. This film is a popcorn classic—a period piece featuring an impressive budget, elaborate sets, and outstanding stars. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/25 Full Review Kas A A spectacular historic piece with a magnificent storyline. Gladiator has to be ranked as one of the greatest films ever made.
