There is little to no characterization, it leans heavily on GLADIATOR (2000) or tropey politics to explain who these characters are and what their role may be here. And I absolutely love (genuinely) that Ridley Scott just does not care.

Paul Mescal knows how to squeeze the sentiment (is it those puppy-dog eyes?) and give the story more than a little heft. He’s good in the arena, too, and captures just enough of Russell Crowe’s swagger to make you believe there’s a connection.

Barely stitched together storyline & terrible building of characters. It's like they just shot a bunch of scenes without transitions to tie them together & you were supposed to fill in the gaps. There was no feeling or connection with the characters. This movie should have been epic & it just fell flat :(
